Responsibilities
Leads laboratory-wide process and quality improvement initiatives that integrate complex scientific and technical operations with the administrative, compliance, financial, and business processes required to support the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory. Partners with scientists, engineers, technical staff, and administrators to translate technical workflows into efficient, sustainable, data-informed operating practices that fosters an environment of continuous improvement and operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and facilitate continuous improvement projects that connect scientific, engineering, technical, operational and administrative functions using Lean, Six Sigma, Value Stream Mapping, and related methodologies.
- Evaluate how technical work flows through business processes such as planning, procurement, documentation, approvals, compliance, reporting, and service delivery; identify inefficiencies, bottlenecks, and risks; and develop solutions that improve quality, responsiveness, and operational effectiveness.
- Collect, analyze, and interpret data to evaluate process performance, identify root causes, develop performance metrics, and support data-driven decision-making.
- Utilize structured problem-solving tools, including DMAIC, 5 Whys, Fishbone analysis, and process mapping to assess how technical workflows interact with business operations to drive measurable and sustainable improvements.
- Develop and deliver training programs, coaching, and mentoring on Lean, Six Sigma, and continuous improvement principles.
- Serve as the laboratory's continuous improvement champion and promote an environment of operational excellence, accountability, and continuous learning.
- Collaborate with scientists, engineers, technical staff, administrators, and university stakeholders to design, document, standardize, and improve business and operational processes while maintaining the flexibility necessary for a research environment.
- Ensure technical workflows are aligned with university policies, financial & administrative procedures, compliance requirements and laboratory quality standards.
- Establish, maintain, and continuously improve process documentation, workflow diagrams, standard operating procedures, dashboards, and performance reporting systems.
- Monitor implementation outcomes, support organizational change management efforts, and promote sustained adoption of process improvements across scientific, technical, and business operations.
Bachelor's degree and nine years of experience; or a high school diploma and thirteen years of experience. (
Note:
post high-school education and/or experience may substitute at a comparable rate.)
- Additional experience qualifies candidates for higher-level consideration (V-VI). Each level requires three additional years of experience.
