General Summary

Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in excavating and grading right-of-way for construction of projects such as highways, streets, drainage ditches, and dams.

• Measure distances from reference points to locate boundaries of construction site.
• Direct work crews operating vehicles and machines to dump, scrape, and spread dirt.
• Verify curvature of graded surface using hand level.
• Perform other duties as described under the Supervisor role.
• May supervise a bituminous paving crew (Supervisor, Asphalt Paving).
• May supervise a work crew engaged in tamping, rolling, and smoothing surface for subgrade of highway (Supervisor, Fine Grading).
• May supervise workers laying drainage tile, concrete, and metal culverts (Supervisor, Culvert Laying).
• May supervise workers operating machines for dumping, rough grading (Supervisor, Dumping; Supervisor, Rough Grading).

High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent.

2 to 4 years of specific job training required to learn the techniques, information, and facility needed for average performance.

• Read engineering drawings.
• Practice good safety habits.
• Work in dusty or dirty surroundings.
• Follow instructions and meet set standards.
• Judge distances and slopes accurately.
• Make decisions based on verifiable standards.

• Stoop, bend, and crouch.
• Use hands, arms, and legs fully.
• See well (either naturally or with correction).
• Lift up to 50 pounds, with frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds.
