Secondary Math Teacher

Full Time, 10 Months

Start Date:

August 2026

Maclay School seeks an engaging, student‑centered educator to teach Secondary Math. The ideal candidate is both academically rigorous and deeply relational, and someone who believes students rise to high expectations when they feel supported, known, and inspired to stretch.

Who You Are

You are a teacher who believes students learn best in a classroom where they feel both supported and challenged. You design math learning experiences that develop conceptual understanding, procedural fluency, and joyful persistence. You know how to help students embrace productive struggle, ask thoughtful questions, and build confidence as emerging mathematicians. You enjoy guiding students toward increasing independence, helping them develop the habits, skills, and mindsets they need to thrive in upper‑level math.

You believe great teaching is both collaborative and iterative, and you’re energized by opportunities to learn, reflect, and grow with a team. Above all, you find deep fulfillment in inspiring curiosity, problem‑solving, and a genuine appreciation for mathematics.

Key Responsibilities
  • Full‑time instructor for Secondary Math, with courses that may include Grade 6 Math, Pre‑Algebra, Algebra I, or Geometry.
  • Design learning experiences that promote conceptual understanding, critical thinking, problem‑solving, and mathematical reasoning.
  • Create and maintain a classroom community that is warm, structured, and encouraging, where students feel safe to take intellectual risks and are also pushed to grow academically.
  • Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning profiles, using varied strategies, representations, and scaffolds to support student mastery.
  • Build systems that help students develop autonomy, organization, and ownership of their learning, including opportunities for self‑assessment and reflection.
  • Integrate real‑world applications, modeling tasks, and cross‑disciplinary connections that help students see the relevance and beauty of mathematics.
  • Collaborate with colleagues within the department and across grade levels to support curricular alignment, placement decisions, and mission‑aligned instruction.
  • Build positive relationships with families through clear, timely communication that supports student growth and strengthens the school–home partnership.
  • Engage fully in the life of the school by advising students, participating in campus activities, and supporting Maclay’s commitment to whole‑child education.
  • Contribute to a vibrant school culture by attending select after‑school events that support community connection and student relationships.
  • Perform additional responsibilities that support the school’s mission and daily functioning as needed.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, Math Education, or a related field required; master’s degree preferred.
  • Prior experience teaching middle school or early high school math preferred; experience with Algebra I or Pre‑Algebra strongly valued.
  • Demonstrated skill in fostering mathematical thinking, discourse, and problem‑solving.
  • Commitment to ongoing professional learning, reflection, and continuous improvement.
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students while holding them to high academic and personal standards.
  • Agenuine desire to help students see themselves as capable, confident math learners.
Physical Requirements and ADA Statement

This role requires regular movement between classrooms and buildings, active engagement in classroom instruction, and the ability to navigate indoor and outdoor school environments. The position also requires the ability to sit, stand, walk, communicate clearly, operate standard classroom technology, and occasionally lift materials up to 20–30 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
