Student Worker Sacristan
The Student Worker Sacristan supports the Catholic worship life of the Saint Leo University community by assisting with the preparation, execution, and cleanup of daily Mass, Eucharistic Adoration, and other liturgical and ministry events. The Sacristan helps ensure that liturgical spaces are properly prepared, reverently maintained, and ready for worship. This position is ideal for a responsible, dependable student who is interested in serving the Catholic community and contributing to the spiritual life of campus.
Dutiesand Tasks
Daily Mass & Liturgical Responsibilities
- Arrive in advance of all Mass and Adoration times to prepare the Abbey/Chapel and sacristy for Mass.
- Set up the altar, credence table, sacred vessels, liturgical books, linens, candles, and other necessary items according to the requirements of the liturgy.
- Assist with preparation for Mass and ensure all necessary materials are in place before the liturgy begins.
- Remain present and attentive throughout Mass as needed to assist with liturgical responsibilities.
- Complete post-Mass cleanup, including properly cleaning and storing liturgical items and returning the chapel and sacristy to an orderly condition.
- Prepare the Abbey and necessary materials for Eucharistic Adoration.
- Assist with transitions before, during, and after Adoration, including setup and cleanup.
- Create and communicate a timely and organized schedule of altar servers and readers at the Mass (fill in during any absence or no-shows)
- Sacristan duties will be expected at student Retreats and off campus events.
Ministry Events
- Assist with setup and cleanup for University Ministry events, retreats, prayer services, liturgies, and other Catholic programming.
- Provide welcoming and helpful support to students, faculty, staff, clergy, and ministry guests during events.
- Assist with event breakdown and returning spaces to their original condition.
General Responsibilities
- Handle sacred items and liturgical materials with appropriate care and reverence.
- Follow established University Ministry procedures and instructions from University Ministry staff.
- Communicate promptly regarding schedule conflicts, absences, or other circumstances that may affect assigned responsibilities.
- Demonstrate reliability, reverence, punctuality, initiative, and professionalism.
- Maintain confidentiality and exercise appropriate discretion when working with students, staff, clergy, and ministry activities.
- Complete other related duties as assigned by University Ministry staff.
Catholic Mission & Conduct
- As a representative of University Ministry, the Student Worker Sacristan is expected to:
- Support and respect the Catholic mission and identity of Saint Leo University.
- Conduct themselves in a manner consistent with Catholic teaching and the values of the University.
- Treat the Mass, Eucharist, chapel, sacred vessels, and other liturgical items with appropriate reverence and respect.
- Foster a welcoming, respectful, and prayerful environment for members of the campus community.
- Demonstrate respect for the dignity of every person and contribute positively to the Catholic community on campus.
Preferred Qualifications & Skills
- Interest in or familiarity with the Catholic faith and Catholic liturgy.
- Previous experience serving as an altar server, sacristan, lector, extraordinary minister, or participating in parish or university ministry is preferred but not required.
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
- Dependable and punctual.
- Ability to work independently and take initiative.
- Comfortable following established procedures and learning liturgical practices.
- Ability to handle responsibilities with maturity, discretion, and reverence.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work effectively with clergy, University Ministry staff, students, faculty, and guests.
- Willingness to assist with occasional evening ministry events outside of the regular daily Mass schedule.
Schedule
