Job
Department:
Magnet Science and Technology division at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory.
- Specific targets as outlined in our strategic plan are a 40 T all‑superconducting magnet system and high‑field HTS inserts up to 60 T. The incumbent will organize and carry out work that includes numerical simulations (COMSOL, ANSYS, Opera, FORTRAN, MATLAB, C++, etc.), system and component testing, data analysis, and providing studies and reports, enabling the department to develop a deep understanding of advanced high‑field magnet systems and successfully design and construct such magnets.
- Secure external funding through competitive grants and industry partnerships, and provide effective mentorship to students, postdoctoral researchers, and early‑career staff involved in the program’s research activities. Results are expected to be presented at international conferences and published in peer‑reviewed journals.
- Manage multiple tasks and projects in parallel to successful completion within technical, budgetary, and schedule constraints; participate in proposal development. Some travel may be required.
- Ph.D. in engineering, physics, or a related field, or equivalent qualification based on professional experience and demonstrated record of achievement in research.
- Experience with finite element modeling using ANSYS, COMSOL, or Opera is required.
- Highly motivated and eager to work flexibly and creatively in a multi‑disciplinary team environment developing a deep understanding of new technologies and specific magnets.
- Good communication skills and the ability to interact constructively with physicists, engineers, designers, technicians, and procurement personnel.
- At least two years of previous experience in numerical modeling of superconducting magnets.
- Strong background in cryogenics, superconducting materials, magnets and their design, especially HTS magnets.
- Familiarity with the general properties and issues of REBCO superconductors.
- Demonstrated success in either developing new magnet technologies or novel modeling of superconducting magnets and systems.
- This is a Faculty position.
- This position requires successful completion of a criminal history background check.
- This position is advertised as open until filled.
