FSU was recently recognized as one of America’s Best-in-State Employers for its strong workplace culture and employee-centered values.
Responsibilities
Responsible for mechanical design applying standard engineering practices, procedures, and criteria in designing complex high field magnet assemblies at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory.
Key Responsibilities
- Responsible for selecting standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria in designing complex magnets.
- Directs conceptual design, detailed system design, and preparation of engineering drawings/documents of magnet systems using 3D CAD and may also include software such as Autodesk Inventor, Solid Works, Pro-Engineer, etc.
- Design from engineering prototype to final system using technology development, fabrication process development, preparation of engineering documentation, and supply chain management.
- Evaluate requirements and constraints of magnets, designed to meet scientific or research needs, and create mechanical designs to accommodate them according to their applied loads.
- Perform structural analyses to designed hardware and fasteners.
- Read and understand technical drawings including geometric dimensioning and tolerancing.
- Develop tooling and assist in building mechanical assemblies while applying quality controls and adhering to safe practices.
- Responsible for preparing, testing, and evaluating plans and specifications of magnets designed to meet scientific or research needs. Ensures the product quality meets the researchers needs.
- Develops unique methods and processes for technical tasks such as system assembly, performance testing and analysis of results.
- Interacts and coordinates with external users, researchers, and scientists in the development and implementation of projects. Assists group leaders in directing individual project/programs. In absence of group leaders may need to provide leadership decision making concerning acquisitions, staff and technical project details.
- Attend team meetings to discuss project testing needs and report test results. Conduct background research to help develop and define engineering requirements.
- Interact with other professional staff for test method development, and the design and construction of magnet systems.
- Perform general laboratory duties such as creating purchase requests, maintaining tools and equipment, and organizing and maintaining inventory.
- Publish and/or present the results designs, testing, or other works in journals or conferences when appropriate.
- Participate in outreach activities and interact with numerous technical visitors from domestic and international laboratories and industries.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and three years of experience; or a high school diploma and seven years of experience. (
Note:
post high-school education and/or experience may substitute at a comparable rate.)
- Additional experience qualifies candidates for higher-level consideration (III–VI). Each level requires three additional years of experience.
- Opportunity to work at a world-renowned national research laboratory.
