Position Overview

In this position, the engineer reports to the engineering manager, Solar and Energy Storage Operations. This individual is responsible for personal safety awareness, maintenance and technical support of all Solar Digital Control/Computer Systems (DCS) and other Solar‑wide Process Control systems, the associated subsystems, and the field input/output devices. Technical support includes training and assisting all Maintenance, Operating, Engineering and Management personnel that utilize the Digital Control Systems.

The engineer supports the updating and maintenance of system backup processes, system software, and data interfaces such as the Canary System (Historian), Maintenance IO and Calibration Report databases. They also handle the Solar DCS’s cybersecurity concerns and related activities.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Ensure the Solar Digital Process Control/Computer systems are maintained and running properly; initiate all necessary repairs and manage system maintenance.
  • Provide day‑to‑day operational and maintenance support to local personnel for all Solar Process Digital Control/Computer systems and subsystems, including spare parts review and common DCS and PLC parts repair and documentation.
  • Maintain the Solar DCS subsystems (Ignition Control System, Canary Historian, Solar Plant Master Controllers).
  • Support upgrades and new installations of Process Control/Computer systems and subsystems, document installations, review alarm priorities, and maintain system documentation.
  • Maintain personal safety awareness through attendance at safety training and general safety meetings; conduct monthly safety procedure reviews and housekeeping reviews.
  • Keep education on state‑of‑the‑art equipment and operating procedures to optimize station controls.
  • Provide technical support and direction in Instrument & Controls, including routine and emergency maintenance, problem resolution, root cause analysis, and documentation for new field installations or upgrades.
  • Develop and implement improved troubleshooting procedures and seek new solutions for I&C control systems.
  • Review and implement Solar Cybersecurity initiatives, including NERC CIP implementation and ongoing system and equipment security management.
Education and Certification Requirements
  • High School Diploma or GED (DCS Maint Specialist).
  • College Degree in Engineering or Computer Science (DCS Engineer).
  • Preferred: ISA Instrumentation & Controls Certification.
  • DCS training (ABB/Bailey preferred).
Experience Requirements
  • Minimum 5 years controls experience in a Process Plant Control environment, with at least 2 years developing, changing, maintaining and troubleshooting DCS logic; maintaining and repairing DCS hardware; installing and maintaining third‑party software.
  • Minimum 7 years controls experience for DCS Maint Specialist Sr; must demonstrate competency in the station‑specific control system through skills testing and board approval.
  • Minimum 4 years related experience for DCS Engineer.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Process control engineering with thorough understanding of control network communications.
  • Familiarity with NERC CIP standard.
  • Maintenance and repair of Emergency Shutdown Systems.
  • Experience with Emerson Ovation digital control systems.
  • Experience with PLC, RTU, HMI and other industrial plant control systems.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Instrumentation controls and devices; programmable logic controls, emergency shutdown systems, distributive control systems, routable/non‑routable communications interfaces; analytical devices; DCS, CAD drawings, electrical drawings, P&, ladder logic and flow diagrams; ability to work in an industrial environment; strong interpersonal oral and written communication skills.

Working Conditions
  • Must respond to plant needs with 24/7 coverage.
  • Must be willing and able to work in dusty, hot and noisy environments.
Physical Demands
  • Baseline physical with pulmonary function and negative pressure respirator fit test.
  • Use of personal protective equipment on the job.
