Position Overview and Responsibilities

OGT, within the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Recreation and Parks, provides leadership and coordination to establish and expand the Florida Greenways and Trails System. The overall goals of this position are to advance the Florida Greenways and Trails System (FGTS) Plan goals, objectives, and strategies; communicate the economic, health, transportation, outdoor recreation, and conservation benefits of the FGTS.

This position helps to implement the FGTS Plan and promote Outdoor Recreation.

  • Provide technical assistance and information to communities, organizations, developers, and others that are planning and establishing trails and greenways.
  • Coordinate the Florida Trail Town Program. This includes facilitating quarterly meetings.
  • Provide advanced technical assistance to local communities regarding the planning, funding, acquisition, design, construction, operation, maintenance and designation of greenways and trails.
  • Coordinate long distance and loop trail corridors identified in the Florida Greenways and Trails Priority trail system. This includes collecting and maintaining project specific information; participating in the master planning process; ensuring consistency during the planning process; identifying key partners along the corridors; serving as the point of contact for the long distance and loop corridors; providing information and making public presentations during the planning and implementation phase of the long distance and loop corridors.
  • Develop relationships and maintain partnerships with state agencies, local governments, metropolitan/transportation planning organizations and other advocacy groups to develop and implement master plans for priority regional trails. Master plans will include existing (green) infrastructure and recreational amenities considerations, trail route mapping, site-specific designs and streetscape standards, potential funding sources, identification of key stakeholder roles and responsibilities, and estimated completion timelines.
  • Coordinate with GIS Section the collection of trails data from local governments and other sources.
  • Facilitate designations of projects as part of the Florida Greenways and Trails System (FGTS).
  • Assist with presentation development.
  • Assist the Outdoor Recreational Professional with outreach and education.
  • Assist with the coordination of meetings, workshops, and events.
  • Represent the Office, Division and Department at meetings, workshops, and conferences, as required.
  • Carry out special assignments and perform related duties as assigned.
  • Travel is required.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of: administrative and office principles, procedures and practices; methods of data collection; principles and techniques of effective verbal and written communications.
Skill in: must be proficient in Microsoft suite applications; public speaking, writing, and program presentation.
Ability to: collect, evaluate, analyze and interpret data; prepare reports; understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies and procedures relating to recreational programs; communicate and interact with the public in a tactful and courteous manner; work independently; plan, organize, and coordinate work assignments; proficiently use computer software applications, particularly Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint; communicate effectively verbally and in writing;

establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; safely operate a state vehicle.
