Overview
The Corrections Deputy Recruit will attend the Corrections Academy. The recruit is considered a civilian until passing the state exam and becoming a certified Corrections Deputy. Recruit pay is $30.66 per hour. Once certified, the annual starting pay is $77,921 (based on 2,229.5 hours annually).
ResponsibilitiesThe Corrections Deputy will be responsible for a wide variety of duties including, but not limited to, care, custody, and control of inmates; assisting and facilitating access to rehabilitation, recovery, and reentry of inmates; escorting inmates to and from housing locations; overseeing various inmate activities including hospital watches; controlling and resolving inmate incidents; conducting searches, monitoring security, and conducting inmate counts;
preventing escapes; participating in facility transports; preparing appropriate reports; mentoring and counseling inmates; responding to inmate requests; responding to emergencies; and performing any other related duties as needed.

- Candidate must be at least nineteen (19) years of age.
- Candidate must be a U.S. citizen (if naturalized, citizenship papers required).
- Candidate must possess a valid High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- Candidate must possess a valid Driver License.
- Candidate must possess at least an Associate’s Degree or equivalent credits, OR if not, must successfully complete the Wonderlic Basic Skills Test and achieve a score of 267 or higher in Verbal Skills and 241 or higher in Quantitative Skills.
- Candidate must have received an honorable discharge if prior military service; applicants who did not complete the military contract are considered on a case‑by‑case basis.
- Candidate must never have been convicted of a felony or a misdemeanor involving perjury or false statement.
- Candidate must meet the agency approved Physical Abilities Test (P.A.T.) standards.
- Candidate must successfully complete an oral review board.
- Candidate must submit to a psychological screening exam with satisfactory results (exam administered by a licensed professional).
- Candidate must submit to a complete physical examination meeting FDLE requirements, including drug screening, hearing and vision screening, and EKG testing.
- All deputies shall take and subscribe to an oath of office; civilian employees shall take and subscribe to an oath of loyalty.
The Corrections Training Academy Physical Fitness Program is very vigorous. Physical training is conducted almost every day between and includes cardiovascular training such as running the track, running the parking garage stairs, circuit training, and using cardio machines. Weight training is performed in circuits, targeting individual muscle groups, with a 30‑second work/45‑second rest interval.
Hours and ScheduleDuring the Academy, the schedule will change throughout based on the topic being taught. The full Corrections Deputy training academy lasts 14 weeks. Most teaching days are held at the Sarasota Training Academy on 2020 Main St. Campus hours are . When training off‑site for high liability topics, hours are typically , including weekends. The schedule is flexible to accommodate unforeseen changes.
HighLiability Training
- Firearms:
Pistol proficiency drills and qualifications (daytime and low light). Familiarize with semiautomatic pistol operation. - Defensive Tactics:
Daily warm‑ups, stretching, takedowns, and having takedowns performed on yourself. - First Aid:
Exposure to graphic lifesaving videos (e.g., applying tourniquets), performing emergency drags, and experiencing them performed on yourself.
After successful completion of the Academy and passing the State Officers Certification Exam, candidates will spend approximately 11 weeks in field training, experiencing day and night shifts. After 26 weeks of training, candidates are assigned to 12‑hour rotational shifts (including night shifts, weekends, and holidays). Day shift is ; night shift is .
