Overview

Florida Department of Health, Division of Disease Control and Health Protection, Bureau of Environmental Health is seeking an Environmental Consultant to join the Public Health Toxicology section. This highly responsible position reports to the Environmental Administrator.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assess potential human health effects from indoor radon and other air contaminants, including biological, physical, and chemical agents.
  • Collect, manage, and analyze scientific data related to radon occurrence, exposure, and risk.
  • Communicate hazards and risks associated with radon exposure and indoor air pollutants to the public.
  • Assist Program Administrator in managing grant activities: prepare grant application packages, schedule projects, and prepare grant reports.
  • Coordinate and conduct public workshops, seminars, and trainings on radon measurement, mitigation, and risk for diverse audiences.
  • Develop partnerships with external groups, create educational materials, and coordinate statewide data collection and data entry of radon measurements.
  • Conduct and evaluate statistical analysis of radon measurement and mitigation results for public health impact and prepare technical reports for publication.
  • Respond to verbal and written inquiries about radon, including certification requirements and measurement protocols.
  • Assist with rule and policy changes, analyze impacts, and coordinate with stakeholders before promulgation.
  • Manage and coordinate radon information on the department website and interact with the Office of Communication to approve informational materials.
  • Work beyond normal hours for emergency duties (e.g., disaster response, special investigations).
Required Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Evaluate, analyze, and interpret comprehensive scientific/technical data.
  • Write technical reports effectively, concisely, and in a well‑organized manner.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access).
  • Skills in public speaking and presentations.
  • Professional, tactful, and courteous communication with the public.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Organize workload and manage time efficiently while maintaining working relationships.
  • Travel for field work, training, and conferences.
  • Collaborate effectively with others to accomplish tasks.
  • Understand and apply applicable rules, regulations, policies, and procedures.
Qualifications

Preferred:
Three (3) years of experience and a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
