Job Duties / Responsibilities

Determine the acceptability of specimens for testing according to established criteria. Perform routine and complex technical procedures and functions according to departmental Standard Operating Procedures. Monitor, operate, and troubleshoot instrumentation to ensure proper functionality. Demonstrate the ability to make technical decisions regarding testing and problem solving. Prepare, test, and evaluate new reagents or controls. Report accurate and timely test results to deliver quality patient care.

Perform and document preventive maintenance and quality control procedures. Identify and replenish testing bench supplies as necessary. Assist with processing of specimens when needed. Maintain a safe work environment and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.

CLIA Standards for Testing Personnel

To qualify, candidates must meet the CLIA standards and possess at least one of the following qualifications:

  • Associate’s Degree in Medical Technology.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Technology or Clinical Laboratory Science.
  • BS in Chemical, Physical, or Biological Science from an accredited college or university, WITH at least one year of training or experience in the specialty in which testing will be performed. Such training must be equivalent to that received in a school of Medical Technology.
  • 90 semester hours from an accredited institution that include the following: 16 semester hours of Biology courses, 16 semester hours of Chemistry (must include at least six hours of inorganic chemistry), 3 semester hours of mathematics – along with having completed an accredited Clinical Laboratory training program or one year of documented Clinical Laboratory training, or experience in the specialty that testing is to be performed.
