Ophthalmic Technician

Center for Sight is the largest eye center in the Pensacola area, with one main complex and two satellite offices to serve the area. We've assembled a team of Board-certified ophthalmologists and experienced optometrists to handle all aspects of eye care, from general exams to LASIK to complex surgeries. Position

Summary

Responsible for assisting the ophthalmologist and optometrists by gathering data pertaining to the patient's ocular health status. The ophthalmic technician is proficient in performing appropriate clinical tests, drawing on formal education and/or clinical experience that provide a solid understanding of the theory and principles of eye care.

Responsibilities

Clinical

  • Reviews patient chart to ensure completeness and accuracy of information.
  • Perform testing ordered by doctor and determined by the type of exam scheduled, patient complaint and/or patient history.
  • Ability to act as a medical scribe while physician examines patient, entering data into electronic medical records.
  • Takes an ocular and systemic history and accurately records visual acuity.
  • Administers topical ophthalmic or oral medications under the direction of the physician.
  • Ability to assist with simple in-office procedures ensures proper informed consent is obtained.
  • Assists with patient education.
  • Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of exam rooms during the workday.
  • Complies with all practice procedures and protocols. Complies with all State and Federal regulations.
  • Understands documentation requirements for quality reporting and testing frequency restrictions.

Administrative

  • Report inventory and supply needs to leadership timely and as needed for supply ordering.
  • Participate in daily team huddles and regularly scheduled meetings as planned and required.
  • Complete work/school excuses and provide patients with medication instructions.
  • Understand and accept responsibility for reporting potential or suspected errors to supervisor or Compliance Officer.
  • Contribute to the team effort by completing additional tasks or projects as needed.
  • Maintain positive attitude consisting of cooperation, self-motivation, courtesy, and professionalism.

Essential Skills

Intermediate comprehension and ability to complete each skill as required based on iJCAHPO training and generally accepted understanding of each technician skill. Intermediate comprehension means applying knowledge correctly in routine and moderately complex situations, understanding core clinical concepts and workflows, and the ability to interpret information rather than just follow instructions.

  • History Taking (including pharmacology understanding for common ophthalmic medications)
  • Visual Acuity
  • Confrontation Visual Fields
  • Extraocular Motility Assessment: evaluation of ductions, perform cover/uncover & alternating cover testing and document defects
  • Pupil Assessment: recognize and identify pupil abnormalities in addition to an APD
  • Intraocular Pressure Measurement with Goldmann applanation via slit lamp or Perkins tonometer
  • Manual Lensometry and accurate transposition between minus and plus cylinder as needed
  • Angle Assessment utilizing the slit lamp microscope
  • Manual refractometry using the Jackson Cross-Cylinder technique
  • Supplemental testing including Amsler Grid, Color Vision, Stereopsis (Randot test), Exophthalmometry, BAT, and PAM

Diagnostic testing including immersion and/or contact A-scan biometry, ultrasound, OCT, visual field, pachymetry, topography, dry eye testing, and fundus photography

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum 3 years' experience as uncertified ophthalmic assistant preferred
  • COA Eligibility preferred
  • Nextech/ICP experience strongly preferred
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced clinical environment.
