Initial placement will generally not exceed 15% of the advertised starting salary and will be based on qualifications and experience. The comparative experience and salary of other County Attorney employees will be considered for parity purposes.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

The primary purpose of this position is to provide paralegal-level support to the attorneys in the County Attorney's Office.

All Leon County employees (regular full‑time and part‑time, OPS, and PRN) are required to work before, during and after a Declared Local State of Emergency (DLSOE). Participation is considered a condition of employment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
  • Provide general and paralegal office support for the attorneys.
  • Draft, type and finalize court documents and general office documents for attorney review and signature, in accordance with office policies and applicable court rules; file pleadings in a variety of courts; provide litigation support including creating and maintaining electronic case files, monitoring receipt of court documents, calendaring responses, gathering materials, creating trial notebooks, and assisting in hearings and/or trials as requested;

    schedule office appointments, depositions, and court hearings.
  • Perform research, analysis, and writing. Research and analyze various issues as requested by attorneys, providing results orally and in writing in an organized and concise manner; maintain knowledge of print and electronic research methods (Westlaw); prepare responsive pleadings for foreclosure and quiet title for attorney review; maintain required continuing legal education hours and report to the Florida Bar to support an active Florida Registered Paralegal designation.
  • Complete special projects. Maintain the print law library, replacing outdated materials with new items; notify attorneys and paralegals when new or updated library items arrive; provide the legal Administrator with packing slips for new library materials; track location of library materials; maintain a list of active print library materials; create, track and maintain agenda item files as needed; complete other special projects as requested.
  • Interact with county staff and the public. Answer incoming telephone calls, greet visitors, respond to inquiries in a timely manner, and forward to attorneys when appropriate.
  • Effectively and efficiently operate personal computer, office machines, and software. Maintain working knowledge of assigned PC and office equipment, all software assigned to this position, and notify supervisor when training is needed.

DIFFICULTY

Work involves research and analysis of case law, statutes, and other legal texts and the ability to translate research findings into legal documents for attorney review. This position works independently in preparing these documents. Most assignments have deadlines and may require frequent shifts in attention and responsibilities. Work consists of complex, varied, frequently non‑standardized tasks requiring intermediate to advanced skill in legal research and deductive reasoning.

RESPONSIBILITY

Supervision Received: The supervisor establishes objectives and resources. The supervisor and employee develop deadlines, projects and tasks. The employee plans and carries out assignments, resolves most conflicts, coordinates work with others, and interprets policy on own initiative. The employee keeps the supervisor informed of progress and potential issues, and must be highly autonomous.

Internal and External Customer Contact: Contacts with all types of people inside and outside the organization to provide, exchange, and receive information.
