Position Summary:

This Assistant Attorney General position is in the Office of the Attorney General within the Civil Legal Services
- Administrative Law in Tallahassee, Florida or Orlando, Florida.

Qualifications
  • Admission to the Florida Bar and two years of professional experience in the practice of law, legal research, teaching law or in administrative or judicial hearings. The required legal experience must be from the practice of law in a state or territory of the United States.
  • Membership in good standing in another state Bar can substitute for the required admission to the Florida Bar provided that, pursuant to Rule 11-1.10 of the Rules Regulating the Florida Bar, the attorney applies for and obtains admission to the Florida Bar within 12 months of appointment to a position in this class
The Work You Will Do
  • Render legal advice and counsel to professional regulatory boards and other state agencies on such matters as the drafting and promulgation of rules, the taking of agency action, and the proper operation of the agency under Chapters 120, 286, and 119, as well as the statutes specifically applicable to each agency.
  • This position requires the interpretation and application of state and federal laws and rules and regulations that affect the duties and functions of the various agencies and requires travel.
  • It requires an ability to review and comprehend voluminous amounts of written materials and a considerable degree of independent professional judgment.
  • It requires the attorney to be prepared to provide counsel and guidance to agency clients on issues and other topics that may be only indirectly related to a specific case or statute but that nevertheless can have an impact on the agencies goals.
  • Conduct independent legal research requiring previous legal experience and the exercise of independent legal judgment.
  • Research and draft pleadings, motions, memoranda and other documents and participate in administrative hearings and trials, as well as settlement negotiations, when applicable.
  • Perform investigations and all aspects of discovery.
  • Exercise a thorough working knowledge of state administrative practice and state rules of civil procedure, evidence and substantive law.
  • Prepare appellate briefs and participate in oral arguments, as needed.
  • The litigation and appeals involve the agencies referenced above, as well as other specific agencies or cases assigned on an ad hoc basis.
  • Respond to inquiries from private attorneys, private citizens, etc., regarding the activities and powers of the various agencies assigned.
  • Maintain current expertise in areas of practice, including reading recent judicial decisions and case summaries and attending continuing legal education and other professional seminars.
  • Perform routine administrative activities; attend staff meetings; prepare travel vouchers, time records, case status.
