As a Vehicle Maintenance Manager on Via’s Operations team, you’ll supervise and perform complex technical and administrative work overseeing the maintenance program for the servicing, maintenance, and repair of all transit equipment and property. You’ll also be a hands‑on member of the maintenance team, working directly to ensure our vehicles and equipment operate successfully and efficiently. This is an in‑person position with the expectation that you will be on‑site five days per week, with flexibility to work occasional evenings, Saturdays, and extended hours as business needs arise.
WhatYou’ll Do
- Service, overhaul, and repair all transit equipment and property; discuss equipment repair with personnel, evaluate problems, write work orders, and assign and prioritize work.
- Manage the full employee lifecycle for drivers: scheduling, PTO approvals, approving timesheets for payroll, daily inquiries, performance conversations, and adherence to workplace policies.
- Inspect work in progress and upon completion; inspect tools and equipment for condition and proper use; approve stock orders for needed parts; maintain records of work; troubleshoot various facilities and transit equipment problems; understand and use automotive test equipment manuals and diagrams.
- Direct and coordinate administrative activities pertinent to the maintenance of system equipment and property; help prepare the maintenance budget and oversee maintenance budget.
- Provide technical advice to mechanics; determine need and feasibility of major repairs on individual pieces of equipment with a strong focus on safety and cost‑effective decisions; train, coach, and mentor staff, ensuring consistent workmanship, safety compliance, and documentation standards.
- Direct and coordinate the ordering, receiving, storing, and distribution of an inventory of equipment supplies and spare parts.
- Diagnose and perform all repairs as required, including but not limited to engine defects, transmission defects, electrical defects, and preventative maintenance.
- Build strong working relationships with partners, vendors, and other stakeholders, including central Via teams and our partners.
- Self‑starter who is proactive and comfortable taking on a high level of responsibility.
- Hands‑on leader who can run a shop day‑to‑day and is comfortable working on the floor alongside the team when needed.
- Vocational automotive training and considerable experience (minimum five years hands‑on; three years supervisory experience preferred or required) in skilled mechanical work strongly preferred.
- Strong project manager eager to create and refine operational processes.
- Outgoing and sociable leader, skilled at communicating professionally with partners, vendors, and partners from a broad range of backgrounds.
- Comfortable prioritizing and working on multiple initiatives with various stakeholders.
- Proficient with technology, such as maintenance software, Google Suite, and email.
- Hold a valid driver’s license.
- Hold a high school diploma or GED certificate.
- Hold an ASE Automobile Service Master Technician Certification for Medium / Heavy Truck or Transit Bus.
- At least 25 years old.
- Successful completion of a mandatory pre‑employment drug test, criminal background check, and motor vehicle records check.
- Final salary will be determined by the candidate’s experience, knowledge, and skills. Salary reflected does not include equity or variable pay, where applicable.
- Salary range: $65,000 – $75,000 per year.
