Overview
The CNC Lathe Operator (Level I) produces machined parts by setting up and operating CNC lathe machines, performing bar feeding or bar pulling operations, verifying machine operation, maintaining accuracy and tolerances, and updating travelers and routings.
Responsibilities- Rely on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform job functions.
- Understand and identify different material types and sizes.
- Review program specifications or blueprints to determine bar machine operations, sequencing, finished workpiece dimensions, or numerical control sequences.
- Input initial part dimensions into machine control panels and insert control instructions into machine control units to start operation.
- Review calculations for machine speed and feed ratios, size and position of cuts, and enter instructions including zero and reference points; set tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculate requirements and prove part programs.
- Understand the difference between M-codes and G-codes.
- Set up bar lathes by installing tools, attachments, collets, bushings, cams, gears, stops, and stock pushers.
- Apply concepts of drilling, grooving, cutting, turning, facing, knurling, and thread chasing, and use each tool appropriately.
- Take measurements, detect malfunctions, troubleshoot processes, and adjust or replace worn tools.
- Adhere to quality assurance procedures and use approved precision measuring equipment.
- Check schedules and prepare the next setup before the current job is complete.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
While performing duties, the employee is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibration. The work environment can be loud.

QualificationsEducation and Experience
High school diploma, GED, and/or technical school graduate with concentration in CNC lathe and mill operations or industry-recognized certification. 1-3 years’ experience required. Experience with Okuma and/or Fanuc preferred.
Skills and Competencies
Must have basic math skills. Able to read, write, and have a working knowledge of English. Knowledge of technical drawings is required. Knowledge in the use of basic measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, dial indicators). Conceptual skills, verbal communication, functional and technical skills, attention to detail, knowledge of tooling, coordination, and being a team player.
