General Description
WATER/WASTEWATER PLANT OPERATOR TECHNICIAN & APPRENTICE – Performs technician work in the operation of a water/wastewater plant and distribution system.
WATER/WASTEWATER PLANT OPERATOR I, II, III & IV – Performs specialized work in the operation of a water/wastewater plant and distribution system as a licensed operator.
Mandatory Testing position that requires Drug Testing.
Essential Functions- Checks all wells and lift stations on a daily basis.
- Assists with collecting samples at wells and wastewater treatment plant.
- Assists in maintenance of all chemical feed systems.
- Performs routine tests required for efficient operation of both water and wastewater treatment plant.
- Checks all treatment processes to ensure plant is operating at peak efficiency.
- Performs routine maintenance and minor construction as assigned.
- Reports any discrepancies found to lead operator.
- Attends training sessions in the safe operation of water/wastewater plants.
- Interacts with the public in an effective and courteous manner.
- Must demonstrate commitment to our mission, vision, values and goals and represent the County in a professional, dignified manner at all times both in actions and appearance.
- May have a role in the County’s disaster preparation and/or disaster recovery efforts, as designated in the County Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan; may be required to work before, during and/or after an emergency.
- Must be able to meet minimum attendance standards.
- Performs related duties as required.
Physical requirements include medium work such as exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 30 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects. The work requires long periods of standing, walking over rough, uneven or rocky surfaces, climbing, bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching and related activities. Lifting of moderately heavy items up to 50 pounds may be required.
The worker must operate a motor vehicle for site visits and possess the physical ability to grasp objects with fingers and palm, perform repetitive wrist motions, and differentiate between colors and shades.
Visually, the worker must have close visual acuity to perform tasks such as preparing and analyzing data, transcribing, reading a computer terminal, visual inspection of small defects or parts, using measurement devices, and assembling or fabricating parts at close distances. The ability to differentiate colors or shades of color is required.
Communications skills include the expression of ideas by spoken word, conveying detailed or important instructions accurately, loudly, or quickly, and perceiving sounds at normal speaking levels with or without correction.
Environmental ConditionsThe work may involve exposure to dangerous situations or environmental stressors such as irate customers, outdoor weather conditions, excessive noise, extreme temperatures, odors, dust, chemicals, etc., for more than 50% of the work time. A respirator is required.
Required Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of general mechanical repair and maintenance, operating procedures applicable to treatment, functions and mechanics of pumps and other plant mechanical equipment.
- Ability to operate a personal computer and related software applications.
- Ability to learn methods and practices of modern water/wastewater plant operations, read meters and charts accurately, maintain records of shift operations, and follow oral and written instructions.
Preferred Qualifications WATER/WASTEWATER PLANT OPERATOR TECHNICIAN (STARTING SALARY $17.84 HOURLY, DOQ)
A four‑year high school diploma or its educational equivalent; or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Licensure and/or CertificationsRequires a valid driver license at the date of hire and maintenance of said license while employed in this position. Must complete a Florida Department of Environmental Protection approved Wastewater course within one (1) year of employment.
