About Our UnitThe Mother Baby Unit (MBU) at Sarasota Memorial Health Care System is a special place where new beginnings are celebrated every day. We provide exceptional postpartum care for mothers, newborns, and high‑risk antepartum patients, with a strong focus on bedside education to empower families in caring for themselves and their babies. Operating 24/7, our unit combines expert skill sets with the welcoming energy of new graduate nurses.
Typical nurse‑to‑patient ratios are 1:4 couplets, with occasional 1:2 assignments depending on patient acuity. Care protocols are tailored to meet each patient’s unique needs, ensuring the highest quality outcomes for every family we serve.
Our staff are recognized for their expertise and compassionate care. The MBU is a unique and specialized unit where nurses provide complex medical care to both postpartum mothers and newborns. We care for the following patient groups:
- Mothers newly postpartum or readmitted up to 6 weeks postpartum
- High‑risk antepartum patients with medical diagnoses
- Term and preterm newborns with and without medical diagnosis
- Postpartum readmissions with medical complications
In addition to our dedicated nursing team, we are supported by a leadership team on the unit, charge nurse, lactation specialist, OB hospitalist, pediatric intervention RN, child life specialist, clinical pharmacist, and case manager—all working solely within our Women & Children’s Division. Our multi‑skilled technicians are trained to assist with both mother and baby populations, ensuring comprehensive support at every step.
WhyJoin Us
The MBU is more than just a unit—it’s a family. Each day brings opportunities to:
- Support mothers through recovery and transition
- Teach families how to care for their newborns with confidence

- Work alongside a team that values compassion, teamwork, and professional growth
Nurses on our unit can also be cross‑trained in other specialty areas within the Women & Children’s Division, opening doors for career advancement.
