Position Summary

The Licensed Practical Nurse (Pediatrics) provides nursing support to pediatric patients and their families in an outpatient healthcare setting. Working under the direction of licensed providers and in accordance with the Florida Nurse Practice Act, the LPN assists with patient assessment, clinical procedures, medication administration, immunizations, patient and caregiver education, care coordination, and documentation.

Responsibilities
  • Prepare pediatric patients for examination by obtaining and documenting vital signs, height, weight, head circumference, pain level, developmental information, medication history, allergies, and the reason for the visit.
  • Review patient records before and during the visit to identify preventive care needs, immunization status, outstanding orders, screenings, referrals, and other care gaps.
  • Assist pediatric providers with examinations, treatments, minor procedures, specimen collection, and other clinical activities within the LPN’s authorized scope of practice.
  • Administer medications and other treatments as ordered by an authorized provider and in accordance with applicable laws, clinical protocols, manufacturer guidance, and Pan Care policies.
  • Verify medication, patient identity, dosage, route, expiration date, storage requirements, and other applicable administration requirements before providing treatment.
  • Monitor pediatric patients for adverse reactions following medication administration and/or treatment and respond in accordance with established clinical protocols.
  • Assist with pediatric screenings, which may include hearing, vision, developmental, behavioral, social needs, and other age-appropriate screenings as directed.
  • Perform point of care testing and collect, label, process, and prepare specimens in accordance with provider orders, infection prevention standards, and applicable laboratory requirements.
  • Communicate clinical observations, abnormal findings, changes in patient condition, and caregiver concerns promptly to the appropriate licensed provider.
  • Respond to patient or caregiver messages and telephone inquiries within the LPN’s scope of practice and according to provider-approved protocols.
  • Document all patient care activities accurately, thoroughly, and timely in the electronic health record.
  • Provide age-appropriate education to patients and caregivers regarding medications, immunizations, nutrition, preventive care, developmental milestones, treatment plans, follow up instructions, and other healthcare needs as directed by the provider.
  • Reinforce provider instructions and confirm that parents, guardians, and caregivers understand the recommended plan of care.
  • Assist with referrals, diagnostic testing, medication prior authorizations, prescription requests, school and daycare forms, and other clinical documentation as assigned and permitted.
  • Support the monitoring and follow up of pediatric patients with chronic conditions, developmental concerns, medication needs, missed appointments, abnormal test results, or other identified health risks.
  • Recognize and promptly report potential signs of abuse, neglect, exploitation, or unsafe conditions in accordance with mandatory reporting requirements and Pan Care policies.
  • Maintain awareness of consent, guardianship, confidentiality, and authorized caregiver requirements applicable to the treatment of minors.
  • Follow established procedures for verifying the identity and authority of individuals providing consent or receiving protected health information on behalf of a minor.
  • Apply developmentally appropriate communication techniques when interacting with infants, children, adolescents, parents, guardians, and caregivers.
  • Use trauma informed and patient-centered approaches to reduce fear, anxiety, and distress during pediatric visits and procedures.
  • Clean and disinfect examination rooms, clinical surfaces, instruments, and equipment in accordance with infection prevention standards.
  • Maintain examination rooms and clinical work areas in a clean, organized, safe, and survey-ready condition.
