Within DCF, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health (SAMH) Program office is recognized as the single state authority for substance abuse and mental health services. The Office of SAMH is statutorily responsible for the planning, evaluation, and implementation of a comprehensive statewide system of care for the prevention, treatment, and recovery of children and adults with serious mental illnesses or substance use disorders.

Northeast Florida State Hospital (NEFSH) is a 613-bed licensed mental health treatment facility located in Macclenny, established in 1959, and is the largest state‑operated civil treatment facility.

• Pre‑employment physical examination required.
• Provides nursing care and treatment for mentally and physically ill residents in accordance with established nursing techniques and procedures in a state mental hospital.
• Perform procedures including catheterizations, enemas, wound care, dressing changes, physical and nutritional management, and vital signs.
• Demonstrate an understanding of medical asepsis and practice infection control principles.
• Provide preventive nursing care by monitoring and supporting hydration, skin integrity, and impactions.
• Assist Registered Nurse in ordering, preparing, and administering prescribed medications.
• Order and maintain supplies from Central Sterile Supply, mindful of cost reduction.
• Maintain compliance with established standards and policies, including use of a Safe‑T‑Lift belt during lifting activities.
• Operate equipment such as suction machines, O₂ tanks, pressure mattresses, one‑touch devices, Geri chairs, Sara, Maxi lifts, and W/P tubs.
• Record and report significant events, residents’ physical and mental conditions, and behavior.
• Chart all medications, treatments, and physical or mental conditions.
• Encourage good nutritional habits and supervise adequate hydration and nutrition.
• Attend and participate in individual and group therapeutic sessions related to health education and training.
• Ensure resident safety by observing and reporting resident responses to medications.
• Maintain knowledge of medication side effects, ensuring good customer service.
• Perform rounds with physicians and provide nursing treatment as directed by physician orders; assist with physical exams, expanding resident service.
• Maintain professional accountability by familiarizing with policies, procedures, and standards pertaining to residents.
• Commit to personal growth by participating in in‑service programs, continuing education, and nursing meetings.
• Maintain current Practical Nurse license and coordinate with the Nurse Supervisor and Staff Development and Training Department for training in safety, CPR, First Aid, Infection Control, remedial education, etc.
