Position: Coral Nursery Mate (BEC) - Summer 2026
Location: Summerland Key

In 2018, Sea Base built its first land‑based coral nursery at the Brinton Environmental Center in Summerland Key. The nursery supports ongoing coral restoration efforts in the Florida Keys and serves as an educational facility for scouts and school groups. Applicants will be responsible for the daily care of corals, assist with field activities such as scuba diving, and engage the public through tours and youth interactions.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in biological sciences, marine science, or a related field from an accredited college or university.
  • Strong background in marine biology, specifically coral biology, physiology, and ecology. Knowledge of water chemistry is critical.
  • Familiarity with Caribbean and Florida coral species and common coral diseases and pests.
  • Scuba certified with 30+ boat dives.
  • Prior relevant fieldwork experience and scientific diving experience.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; must lift 50+ pounds and perform precise, repetitive tasks while standing/walking in hot, humid, buggy conditions for multiple hours a day.
  • All applicants should desire to work in a residential, community setting.
  • Preferred: experience in coral restoration efforts and/or aquarium husbandry.
Responsibilities
  • Daily coral husbandry, including feeding, siphoning, and algal mitigation.
  • Basic maintenance, including cleaning tanks and life support maintenance.
  • Coral propagation using microfragmentation techniques.
  • Collaborate with colleagues to support field activities, including but not limited to outplanting and monitoring corals.
