Location: Lecanto

The Grounds Maintenance Worker performs a variety of tasks related to small-scale landscaping operations, grounds maintenance, and park improvement projects throughout the County. This position operates under general supervision, following established procedures but exercising judgment in how and when tasks are completed. The role supports the maintenance and beautification of parks, greenways, athletic fields, and public outdoor spaces to ensure they are safe, clean, and attractive for community use.

The schedule for this full-time position is typically Monday through Friday, 6:30am to 3:00pm with flexibility to adjust to evening and weekend shifts based on operational needs.

  • Drives and/or operates a county vehicle or equipment and must obey all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws.
  • Fertilizes lawn and landscaping. Maintains logs of products and chemicals used.
  • Performs pond maintenance.
  • Assists with median irrigation and landscaping.
  • Assists with litter control in parks, green spaces, roads, and rights-of-way.
  • Performs general maintenance on equipment and facilities.
  • Mows, trims, edges, and weeds turf and green spaces.
  • Completes work orders and daily paperwork of finished tasks.
  • Maintains sports fields and restroom facilities.
  • Performs minor repairs on fences.
  • Paints and cleans buildings, as necessary.
  • Inspects piers, boat ramps, walkways, gazebos, playgrounds, park amenities, tables and benches in County parks and public areas.
  • Assists with disaster preparedness and emergency response in event of a natural disaster or other emergency event.
  • Performs other duties as required.
Education, Training, and Experience
  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
  • Six (6) months of experience in groundskeeping, parks maintenance, landscaping, or a closely related field.
  • Successful completion of classes in turf grass or grounds maintenance, preferred.
Skills and Abilities
  • Must have sufficient physical strength, agility, and stamina to perform outdoor labor in various weather and environmental conditions.
  • Ability to use effectively standard landscaping tools and equipment.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions and complete tasks independently or as part of a team.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Requires ability to maintain courteous and effective relations with County staff, elected officials, community interest groups and the public.
  • Ability to work after normal business hours (includes nights and weekend) for operational need and in response to emergencies.
Certificates, Licenses, and Registration
  • Valid Florida Driver License or must obtain within 30 days of establishing residency in Florida.
  • Must have or be able to obtain within 90 days certification in FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) courses:
    • IS-100.c:
      Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS); and
    • IS-700.b:
      An Introduction to the National Incident Management System
Physical Requirements /Work Environment
  • Requires standing and walking most of the workday. Require working primarily outdoors.
  • The job involves frequently lifting up to 50 pounds. Frequent carrying up to 10 pounds, while occasionally up to 20 pounds.
  • The job requires frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, balancing, twisting, and reaching above shoulders, and occasionally climbing and throwing.
  • Task require simple grasping, pushing, pulling, fine manual manipulation, operating foot controls/levers, driving automotive equipment, and occasionally operating a manual transmission and working in darkness.
  • The job requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing, speaking, color perception, and depth perception.
  • The job may risk exposure to adverse weather, moving machinery, fumes and gases, dust and chemicals, and extreme noise.

Emergency Response/Recovery Activities
  • All employees will be required to work before, during, or after an emergency. During an emergency, employees may temporarily be assigned to work and perform duties outside the normal scope of their position, location, and work schedule to fit the needs of the County and its citizens. Emergency response duties may also include driving and/or operating a county vehicle or equipment and employees must obey all safety policies, and roadway rules and laws.
