Position SummaryThe Landscape Laborer plays a vital role in maintaining and enhancing outdoor environments by performing a wide range of physical tasks that support landscaping, ground maintenance, and installation projects. This position is responsible for site preparation, planting, mulching, trimming, and assisting with the installation of landscape features to create aesthetically pleasing, functional, and sustainable outdoor spaces. Landscape Laborers work closely with supervisors, crew leaders, and team members to execute landscape design plans, maintain plant health, and ensure that project timelines and quality standards are met.
The position requires attention to detail, reliability, and adherence to safety procedures when operating tools, machinery, and working around the general public. This role contributes directly to creating safe, attractive, and environmentally responsible outdoor spaces that meet client expectations and community standards.
This position requires substantial physical activity and outdoor work in varying environmental conditions.
Employees must be able to:
- Lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50–75 pounds regularly
- Perform repetitive bending, kneeling, squatting, and twisting
- Stand, walk, or work on uneven terrain for extended periods (8+ hours)
- Use hand tools and power equipment requiring grip strength and manual dexterity
- Work outdoors in various weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, humidity, and dust
- Operate equipment that produces vibration, noise, and airborne debris
- Maintain balance while working on slopes, ladders, or uneven ground
- Perform overhead work such as trimming branches or installing materials
- Wear and use required personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, safety glasses, boots, and high‑visibility safety apparel
- Ability to perform physically demanding tasks including lifting, bending, digging, and standing for extended periods
- Basic knowledge of landscaping tools and equipment
- Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation to job sites within the United States
- Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
- Strong work ethic and ability to follow instructions and safety procedures
- Ability to work cooperatively in a team environment
- Previous experience in landscaping, grounds maintenance, or outdoor construction
- Familiarity with plant identification and horticultural practices
- Certification in pesticide application or landscaping safety
- Experience operating landscaping machinery such as mowers, trimmers, and small tractors
- Basic understanding of landscape installation and design principles
- OSHA safety training or equivalent safety certification
- Assist with the installation and maintenance of landscaping elements including plants, trees, shrubs, turf, irrigation components, and landscape materials
- Prepare work sites by removing debris, grading soil, digging holes, and setting up necessary equipment
- Plant trees, shrubs, flowers, and sod according to landscape design specifications
- Apply mulch, fertilizer, soil amendments, herbicides, and pesticides following safety guidelines and environmental regulations
- Safely operate hand tools, electric equipment, and landscaping machinery
- Perform trimming, pruning, and general grounds maintenance
- Load, transport, and unload landscaping materials such as soil, mulch, stone, plants, and tools
- Maintain tools and equipment in safe working conditions and report maintenance needs or safety issues
- Assist with site cleanup and ensure work areas remain organized and safe
- Follow all company safety policies, OSHA standards, and operational procedures
The required skills enable the Landscape Laborer to effectively perform manual labor tasks such as planting, mulching, trimming, and site preparation while maintaining safety and efficiency.
