Senior Burn Crew Member (SBCM) works in a team environment and participates in prescribed fire operations overseeing staff and volunteers during fire related activities which include ignition, control, mop-up, suppression, and monitoring. SBCM may conduct other land management activities as assigned by the Fire manager and Land Conservation Specialist.

We’re Looking For You

The SBCM participates in preparing fire lines, maintaining equipment, pre-burn and post-burn monitoring, and other tasks while overseeing staff and volunteers. May perform other land management duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire.

As part of SBCM’s ongoing professional development, they will be responsible for keeping abreast of new burn techniques and equipment to enhance skills and maintain/grow professional fire certification credentials. In addition, they shall work to build and maintain relationships in the professional fire community and in the local community where the Conservancy works. This may include participation in prescribed fire activities in partnership with other non-profits, local fire departments, and local, state, and federal agencies.

& Scope

The SBM will represent The Nature Conservancy’s Central Florida Ecosystem Restoration Team (ERT) in the places they work. Their attitude and fire practitioner skills will be important as we prepare fire lines, maintain equipment, conduct pre- and post-burn monitoring, and do other prescribed fire related tasks. They may perform other land management duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire.

They will be asked to serve in roles that commensurate with their qualification and experience.

The intent of this position is to provide support for prescribed fire operations on conservation lands throughout Central Florida. This is a full-time, seasonal, hourly wage position, and overtime applies after the first 40 hours each week. Lodging will be provided at either The Disney Wilderness Preserve, Kissimmee, FL or Tiger Creek Preserve, Babson Park, FL.

The Senior Burn Crew Member Will Be Expected To
  • Function as both leader and member of a work team under the supervision of the Land Conservation Specialist.
  • Act as crew lead and convey work instructions to the burn crew members.
  • Works as a team player in a high-stress environment.
  • Assist with all aspects of prescribed burning.
  • Maintain assigned equipment
  • Perform other land management duties when conditions are not conducive to prescribed fire, including invasive species treatments and hardwood reduction projects.
  • Ability to perform heavy physical work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
  • Operate 4x4 Trucks, ATVs, UTVs, tractors, chain saws, leaf blowers, trailers, and a variety of power tools.
  • Maintain accurate records of work time, expenses, and submit reports in a timely manner.
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
What You’ll Bring
  • High school diploma.
  • Fire Fighter Type 2 (FFT2) qualified, including Introduction to ISC (I-100), Human Factors on the Fire Line (L-180), Introduction to Wild Land Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighting Training (S-130). See TNC Fire Management Manual.
  • Two seasons as a qualified FFT2 or agency equivalent.
  • Must achieve physical fitness standards of Arduous pack test as determined by the local Fire Program Manager and the TNC Fire Manual.
  • Experience operating various types of equipment (T6 engines, UTVs, ATVs, chainsaws, etc.)
  • Must be able to obtain related licenses or certifications as required. (e.g., First Aid, CPR).
  • Must have a valid driver’s license and good driving record.
Desired Qualifications
  • S-212 Wildland Chainsaw Training or equivalent
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
  • Experience managing volunteers or entry-level staff.
  • Ability and willingness to work in a team environment.
  • Two or more years of experience in fire operations related experience in land management or a similar field.
  • Working knowledge of common software applications (e.g., Word, Excel, Web…
