Your Specific Responsibilities:
The Public Information Specialist for DOH-Flagler is part of a global public health organization and is expected to support the Florida Department of Health in Volusia County Department of Health in Flagler County in its mission to protect, promote and improve the health of all people in Florida through integrated state, county and community efforts and its vision "to be the Healthiest State in the Nation."
Furthermore, this position ie expected to incorporate agency values of innovation, collaboration, accountability, responsiveness and excellence in all aspects of their work.
Employee timely and professional responses to requests for information. Employee is engaged with internal/external customers and accurately communicates program/agency information, events, and/or vision during interactions. Employee is involved with decision making that positively effects the agency and/or identifies opportunities to provide excellent service acts to implement corrections, documenting them and communicating them to co-workers and the health officer.
Media Relations:
Coordinates information related to media inquires with DOH-Flagler staff and the State Communications Office. Responds to inquiries related to public health concerns, programs and services, emergencies, etc. Recommends media-related strategies during routine and/or crisis public health events. Coordinates press conferences, public forums, and community information forums as directed. Monitors news outlets and social media and advises leadership of any concerns. Responds to inaccuracies as permitted.
Uses Associated Press style to construct press releases and edits and releases state approved health alerts.
Customer Focus:
Gathers customer feedback data and reports feedback to program managers, leadership and County Health Systems.
Internal Communications:
Prepares and submits county-specific news for the department of health intranet. Assures the agency's website is up to date and accurate. Contributes content to the Volusia/Flagler Communications Team for the employee newsletter. Coordinates and assist in provision of a variety of public relations and public information services following established administrative policies, procedures, guidelines, and directives. Assists with outreach and marketing of programs and services.
Coordinates the purchase of marketing materials for use by programs, making sure messaging and design standards adhere to State guidance. Coordinates agency-wide meetings/trainings.
Emergency Preparedness:
Attends PIO state-trainings and collaborations. Maintains appropriate FEMA certification. Collaborates with other county personnel in the sharing and releasing of emergency information. Assists the emergency operations team for Flagler and Volusia County during activation.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to develop informational program materials
Skilled in verbal and written communication skills
Ability to elicit the professional confidence and cooperation of others
Ability to be organized and work on deadline
Qualifications:
Minimum
- Must be willing to accept this salary if offered the position
Must be willing to physically come in the office to perform the duties & responsibilities of the positions
Must have current authorization to work in the United States without employer sponsorship
Must have experience in Public Information, Journalism or Communications
Must have experience writing in journalistic style
Must have experience with photography and or graphic design software
Preferred
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in a field of study reasonably related to journalism, communications or public relations.
Or
At least four years of professional and relevant experience in public information, government communications, public relations or journalism. Preference will be given to those with a bachelor's degree and those with FEMA certified Public Information Officer training.
