The Asphalt Testing Technician is responsible for performing asphalt inspections, materials testing, sampling, documentation, and quality assurance activities to verify compliance with project specifications, FAA/FDOT requirements, and applicable standards. This position works closely with contractors, personnel, project managers, and laboratory staff to support the successful production and placement of asphalt materials for transportation and infrastructure projects.
The Asphalt Testing Technician is expected to maintain accurate records, perform testing procedures in accordance with applicable standards, and communicate effectively with project stakeholders regarding testing results and observations.
Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Perform asphalt inspections and testing activities in accordance with FDOT, FAA, and project requirements.
- Obtain and document asphalt mixture samples for testing and quality control purposes.
- Perform plant and field testing procedures using approved testing methods and equipment.
- Monitor asphalt production operations and document observations related to material quality and compliance.
- Review project plans, specifications, testing requirements, and quality control procedures.
- Maintain accurate daily reports, testing records, and supporting documentation.
- Operate testing equipment and ensure equipment is maintained and calibrated as required.
- Communicate testing results, observations, and potential issues to project personnel and management.
- Assist with troubleshooting material quality concerns and identifying corrective actions.
- Coordinate with laboratory personnel regarding sample delivery, testing schedules, and reporting requirements.
- Maintain compliance with company safety policies and applicable regulatory requirements.
- Support additional construction materials testing and inspection services as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Florida CTQP Asphalt Plant Level II certification.
- Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Ability to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, overtime, and off shift assignments as required.
- Ability to pass pre-employment and ongoing drug screening requirements.
- Ability to pass an FBI background check
- Two (2) or more years of experience in asphalt testing, construction materials testing, or quality control.
- Florida CTQP Paving Level I certification.
- Florida CTQP Paving Level II certification.
- ACI, ICC, FDOT CTQP, or other industry related certifications.
- Experience working on FDOT, airport/FAA, transportation, or public infrastructure projects.
- Familiarity with asphalt production, aggregate testing, and quality assurance procedures.
- Knowledge of asphalt materials, testing procedures, and quality control practices.
- Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, testing procedures, and project requirements.
- Strong attention to detail and documentation skills.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Basic mathematics and data calculation skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and electronic reporting systems.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a project team.
- Commitment to workplace safety and quality assurance standards.
This position requires extensive field work in active construction environments and varying weather conditions throughout Florida.
The employee must be able to:
- Work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions, including heat, humidity, rain, and direct sunlight.
- Walk and stand for extended periods on uneven terrain and active project sites.
- Climb stairs, ladders, scaffolding, and temporary access structures as necessary.
- Lift, carry, push, and pull materials or equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.
- Safely access and navigate construction sites and asphalt production facilities.
- Perform visual inspections and documentation of project activities.
- Wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
- Operate a motor vehicle for travel to project sites throughout Florida.
Travel requirements will vary by position and project assignment.
- Local and statewide travel may be required.
- Overnight travel may be required based on project needs.
