This is a position for an undergraduate student research assistant. The student will be participating in research on the microbial community of marine invertebrates.

This position is for 29 hours a week at $18 per hour.
Students can receive course credit for this position through the Career Center.
Examples of Duties

Facility Support:
The responsibilities of the Undergraduate Research Assistant include, but are not limited to the following:

Processing collected animals or settlement plates by photographing said animals or plates, preserving samples, keying out and identifying individual organisms, and preparing samples for DNA analysis.

Preparation of organismal and/or environmental DNA for sequencing, consisting of:

• DNA extraction
• PCR amplification of the DNA
• Gel electrophoresis
• DNA barcoding
• Normalization of DNA concentrations

Entering and managing data

Assistance with analysis and manuscript preparations for submission to peer-reviewed scientific journals

By the end of this experience, students will be able to:

• Apply laboratory techniques (e.g., DNA extraction, PCR, gel electrophoresis) with accuracy and consistency
• Analyze and interpret biological and environmental data
• Maintain organized and accurate research records and datasets
• Contribute to scientific writing and communicate findings for academic audiences

Minimum Qualifications

• Must be a student at NCF, have taken Foundations I and II, and have an enthusiasm for lab research.
• Must have strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
• Punctual, reliable, and eager to contribute to efforts in the lab.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience doing gel electrophoresis, performing PCR, use of a micropipette, and familiarity with sterile technique.
• Experience using Microsoft Excel/Word, and Google Sheets/Docs.
