Job Description & How to Apply Below
Position: Student Research Assistant, Seagrass Recovery, Bedgood EDAP 2026
Location: Sarasota

The purpose of this role is to support a long‑term ecological monitoring project assessing the impacts of the reopening of Midnight Pass in Sarasota Bay. The position involves contributing to field and laboratory research examining changes in seagrass habitats, water quality, and associated fish and invertebrate communities. Through hands‑on data collection, analysis, and independent research, this role helps generate critical insights into ecosystem recovery and coastal restoration.

The work directly informs management strategies to improve water quality, support biodiversity, and guide restoration efforts in Sarasota Bay.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct monthly fieldwork at Midnight Pass and surrounding sites, including seining for fish and invertebrates, collecting water quality measurements (salinity, temperature, turbidity), and gathering sediment samples. Assist with GoPro‑based transect surveys for seagrass and substrate analysis.
  • Process sediment and water samples, including preparation for analysis, basic water chemistry testing, and participation in genetic workflows such as DNA extractions, PCR, and gel electrophoresis.
  • Identify fish, invertebrates, and seagrass species from field collections and video footage. Accurately record and organize ecological data to support long‑term monitoring efforts.
  • Enter, clean, and manage datasets; assist with basic data visualization and interpretation to identify trends in habitat recovery, biodiversity, and environmental conditions.
  • Design and execute an independent research project aligned with the broader Midnight Pass study, including forming research questions, collecting relevant data, and synthesizing findings.
Training
  • Students participating in this project will receive hands‑on training in all aspects of field and laboratory research related to the major goals described above.
Internship Credit

Students can receive course credit as an internship through the Office of Career and Engagement.

Qualifications
  • A passion for field and/or lab work is essential for success, but prior experience is not required. It is critical that applicants be willing to learn, actively engage, and work with their peers. Coursework in introductory biology is preferred, but students of all backgrounds are welcome to apply.
