Department

The Florida State University Coastal and Marine Laboratory (FSUCML) is located on the northeastern Gulf coast in a relatively undeveloped area of rich biological diversity one hour south of the FSU main campus in Tallahassee.

This Wetlands and Water Levels Research Technician position is located in Eastpoint, Florida at the Apalachicola National Estuarine Research Reserve.

Responsibilities

ANERR WWL program technician:
Under direct supervision of the ANERR Research Coordinator (RC) the technician will assist the RC to manage and coordinate all aspects of the Reserve’s WWL program to include, but not limited to maintenance of equipment, data collection, management, QA/QC, and submission to CDMO and other data bases as applicable.

  • Surface Elevation Table (SET) program, including twice annual data collection at all Reserve SET stations, data entry, QA/QC, and future submissions to CDMO databases.
  • Porewater loggers:
    Maintenance of equipment, maintenance of wells and station locations, data collection, management, QA/QC.
  • Emergent vegetation data collection, including working with contractors to collect yearly data, working with grant and administrative staff to ensure contracts move forward, data entry, QA/QC, and submission to CDMO.

General ANERR Research technician:
Under direct supervision of the RC, the technician will assist with the responsibilities of the ANERR System-Wide Monitoring (SWMP) water quality, nutrient, and meteorological programs, biological monitoring programs. Candidate will assist the RC and fellow research staff with planning, coordinating, and executing research field, data management, and data analysis priorities. Tasks include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Participates in field and laboratory research activities
  • Coordinates boat trips with fellow research team members
  • Assists the RC with coordination with outside researchers
  • Gives public presentations of Reserve data
  • Participates in general public and peer-reviewed scientific writing

General ANERR Stewardship assistance:
Under supervision of the ANERR Stewardship Coordinator, the technician will assist stewardship staff with the planning, coordination and executing stewardship field, data management, and data analysis priorities. Tasks include, but are not limited to the following:

  • Emergent marsh and mangroves vegetation surveys
  • Sea turtle nesting surveys
  • Invasive plant surveys and treatments
  • Habitat mapping emergent marsh and mangroves vegetation surveys
  • Sea turtle nesting surveys
  • Invasive plant surveys and treatments
  • Habitat mapping
  • Public use and access
Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in marine science, biology, wildlife, fisheries, natural resources, environmental science, or a related field; or a high school diploma/equivalent and four years of relevant experience. (

Note:

a combination of post high school education and experience equal to four years.)

Must have a valid Florida or Georgia Driver's License, or the ability to obtain prior to hire.

This position requires a scientific diver certification, or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
