Location: Melbourne Beach
The Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission seeks a Biological Scientist I to support marine mammal research and conservation efforts at the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute in Melbourne Beach. This seasonal position involves responding to marine mammal stranding calls, conducting necropsies on manatees, assisting with rescue and transport operations, and supporting related research projects. The role requires field and laboratory work with heavy manual labor and operates under the Marine Mammal Section.
Key qualifications:
- 4 years professional experience in a biological field or laboratory program, or a bachelor's degree in biological sciences
- Marine mammal stranding-response experience preferred
- Experience conducting marine mammal necropsies and necropsy report writing
- Ability to safely operate and trailer boats less than 30 feet
- Ability to swim sufficiently to save oneself in an emergency and lift at least 50 lbs
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office, ArcGIS, and scientific field equipment
