POSITION SPECIFICS

The Department of Cell and Biological Systems at the Penn State University College of Medicine invites applications from outstanding Ph.D. and/or M.D. scientists for a tenure-track position, to be filled at the rank of Assistant or Associate or Full Professor. The Department is within the thriving research environment of the College of Medicine and the renowned Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, located in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

The Department has broad strengths in cellular and molecular approaches toward basic and translational research. The search welcomes applicants with strong records of research accomplishment in any areas of biomedical research that may complement and/or expand the research interests of the Department.

The Department has a range of research focus areas including inflammation and innate immunity; virology; cellular signaling and metabolism; structure/function of membrane proteins; cytoskeleton and contractile proteins; mitochondria function and dynamics; microvascular regulation; diabetes; neurodegeneration; and cancer biology.

The Department enjoys strong interactions with the Penn State Cancer Institute, the Heart and Vascular Institute, the Institute for Personalized Medicine, the NIH-supported Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and the outstanding Core Facilities and Research Resources within the Penn State College of Medicine. The on-campus Cryo-EM Center houses state-of-the-art equipment, such as a Titan Krios microscope and a Hydra Bio Plasma-Focus Ion Beam scanning electron microscope.

The faculty candidate will be an outstanding scientist holding a Ph.D. and/or M.D. The applicant will have a strong record of research accomplishment in any areas of biomedical research that may complement and/or expand the research interests of the Department.

The candidate will have an independent research program and a record of accomplishments such as outstanding publications and a record of external funding.

FIELD OF STUDY FOR PHD AND/OR MD: biomedical research

• -direct a nationally recognized research program in an area biomedical science that complements existing strengths in the Department
• -attract robust external funding to support the scholar’s research
• -provide an outstanding environment for training students and postdoctoral fellows
• -teach in the graduate and medical curriculum
• -participate in administrative service to the Department, College, and University

• -present their work at research conferences or seminars
• -publish manuscripts
• -participate in peer review for journals and grant panels
• -serve in leadership roles in scientific societies
