Overview

The City of Tallahassee is seeking a qualified Laboratory Analyst II or Laboratory Analyst III to perform physical, chemical and/or biological analyses on water, wastewater and other environmental samples. The position will be filled as a Laboratory Analyst II or III, commensurate with the selected candidate’s qualifications, experience, and demonstrated expertise.

This position supports laboratory operations by conducting routine and advanced analyses in accordance with established methods, quality assurance/quality control (QA/QC) standards and regulatory requirements.

Salary Range: $21.6689 to $58.7999/hourly, depending on experience and qualifications

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Duties Applicable to Both Levels

  • Perform physical, chemical, and biological analyses on water, wastewater, groundwater, sediments, sludges, and related environmental samples
  • Conduct water quality tests including, but not limited to, biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), residual chlorine, bacteriological tests, and pH
  • Prepare standard solutions, reagents, and media
  • Maintain, clean, and perform routine maintenance on analytical equipment; troubleshoot equipment issues to ensure accurate performance
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation in accordance with QA/QC requirements
  • Report analytical problems, procedural issues, and supply needs to the supervisor
  • Follow laboratory safety procedures and regulatory requirements

Laboratory Analyst II – Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform complex routine and non-routine analyses with limited general supervision
  • Review analytical results for accuracy and QA/QC acceptability prior to submission to the supervisor
  • Assist in training and providing guidance to laboratory technicians
  • Assist in interpreting and developing new analytical methods and procedures
  • Make improvements to analytical methods and laboratory procedures as needed
  • Achieve and maintain expertise in two of the following chemistry sections:
    Physical, Metals, or Nutrients

Laboratory Analyst III – Additional Responsibilities

  • Perform complex and advanced analyses with extensive independence and minimal supervision
  • Plan, conduct, and coordinate a variety of water quality tests
  • Independently review and validate analytical results and QA/QC data
  • Assist in training, mentoring, and providing technical guidance to laboratory technicians and lower-level Laboratory Analysts
  • Review methods and analyses performed by lower-level staff for accuracy and QA/QC acceptability
  • Develop, research, interpret, and implement new or improved analytical methods and procedures
  • Communicate procedural changes and new methods to laboratory staff
  • Achieve and maintain expertise in Volatile or Semi-Volatile sections and expertise in one of the following chemistry sections:
    Physical, Metals, or Nutrients OR
  • Achieve and maintain expertise in all three of the following chemistry sections:
    Physical, Metals, and Nutrients
Minimum Training and Experience

Laboratory Analyst II

Possession of a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or a related field and two years of technical, professional experience in environmental water and/or wastewater analysis, analytical chemistry or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Possession of a master’s degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or a related field can substitute for one year of required experience. Possession of a PhD in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or a related field can substitute for two years of required experience

Laboratory Analyst III

Possession of a bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or a related field. and three years of technical, professional experience in environmental water and/or wastewater analysis, analytical chemistry or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Possession of a master’s degree in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or a related field may substitute for one year of the required experience, Possession of a PhD in chemistry, biology, environmental science, or a related field may substitute for two years of required experience.
