Position Overview and Responsibilities

The Environmental Supervisor IV, position number , is in the Division of Environmental Assessment and Restoration’s Biology Program in Tallahassee and will be responsible for managing six positions in the Bench Biology laboratory responsible for microbiology and chlorophyll analysis. Responsibilities include hiring and supervising staff, authorizing data, leading projects, and providing technical consulting. This work provides the department and other resource agencies with the highest quality laboratory services available.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of supervision and management.
  • Knowledge of the terminology, principles and techniques used in physical and natural sciences, biological research, analysis, or testing.
  • Knowledge of principles, procedures, techniques, and equipment used in bench biology laboratory testing and analysis.
  • Ability to determine work priorities, assign work, document activities, and ensure timely completion of multiple concurrent assignments.
  • Ability to use QC measures to evaluate accuracy, precision and efficiency of biological methods and ensure high quality data.
  • Ability to maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for analytical methods and laboratory procedures, including all necessary documentation to support quality control procedures.
  • Ability to use laboratory information management systems (LIMS) for sample processing and reporting.
  • Ability to instruct, train, and monitor staff in the proper performance of laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to prepare technical reports and presentations.
  • Ability to effectively evaluate, report, and present complex scientific information and respond to questions from management, clients, auditors, and internal customers
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to think critically and utilize problem-solving techniques.
  • Ability to manage, supervise, and motivate people to meet assigned objectives
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
  • Ability to work independently, and to work well in a group.
  • Ability to participate in the laboratory freezer/refrigerator alarm monitoring.
Minimum Qualifications
  • At least eight (8) years of verifiable, related experience in environmental science, biology, chemistry, public health, or a closely related scientific or engineering field. At least one (1) year of experience in a supervisory or leadership role (e.g., supervisor, coordinator, project or program manager, team lead, team trainer), or completion of recognized leadership or management training. A post-secondary degree in one of the above fields from an accredited institution may substitute for experience on a year-for-year basis.

Position of Special Trust and Other

This position is designated as a Position of Special Trust in accordance with DEP Directive 422, Positions of Special Trust or Responsibility. Successful completion of background screening will be required for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher with ≥16 semester credit hours in general microbiology and biology

• ≥2 years of microbiological analysis experience for a laboratory seeking or maintaining accreditation
