CORRECTIONAL OFFICER SERGEANT -

Union Correctional Institution (RAIFORD, FL)

Qualifications
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Be a citizen of the United States
  • Must have a High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must have completed the basic recruit training course for correctional officers and have one year of experience as a certified officer with the State of Florida
  • Must not have received a suspension within the past 12 months
  • Must not have received an involuntary demotion within the past 24 months
  • Must not have received less than a 3.00 rating on a performance evaluation within the past 3 fiscal years
Responsibilities

Supervise male or female inmates commensurate with the level of risk they present; manage inmate housing areas; enforce rules and sanitation standards; transport inmates using approved restraints; perform accurate head counts; maintain custody and control of inmates at appointments outside the secured perimeter and escort inmates within the secured perimeter; inventory personal property of inmates and issue receipts.

Perform crisis intervention functions, including subduing or restraining violent or uncooperative inmates, defending persons against attack, preventing escapes, and using approved deadly or non‑deadly force, restraints or other approved methods. Required to wear body armor and use weapons.

Maintain facility security: perform searches of inmates and other persons; inspect body cavities; check inmate mail and/or packages for contraband; observe inmate behavior to identify mental or emotional disorders; use counseling techniques or referrals; conduct inspections and visual and audio surveillance of persons, property, vehicles, buildings, and outdoor areas; physically check doors, windows, gates, fences and other areas to ensure proper security.

Provide emergency assistance during emergencies, disasters and accidents, including CPR, first aid, apprehending escaping or escaped inmates, implementing evacuation procedures, and providing security of inmates and/or areas in accordance with the emergency situation.

Direct Correctional Officers in supervising inmates in housing units, in segregation for administrative or punitive measures, checking inmate mail for contraband, supervising inmates working on work details inside and outside the fenced perimeter, maintaining master inmate location counts, directing the operation of the Control Room or the Main Gate, ensuring transportation permits are completed accurately and signed by the appropriate authority, and preparing reports such as special progress, minor work, disciplinary and/or incident reports.

Attend mandatory and other training as required.

Perform other related duties as required.
