Position: Substation Technician 1st / 2nd Class

General Purpose of Job

1 st Class

This position is responsible for performing safe, efficient and reliable construction, inspection, testing, maintenance and repair of electric distribution substation equipment and facilities. This position is responsible for records and reports necessary to maintain electrical service to customers; investigate and perform prompt restoration of service.

2 nd Class

This position will assist in the construction, inspection, testing, maintenance and repair of electric distribution substation equipment and facilities in a safe, efficient and reliable manner.

Substation Technician 2nd Class Education
  • Minimum:
    High School or GED
  • Minimum:
    Substation apprenticeship training or other related education required for progression or advancement in classification.
Experience
  • Preferred:
    Two (2) years progressive substation experience or an equivalent position with a distribution electric utility or related industry is preferred.
Education and/or Experience Notes

In lieu of progressive substation experience, a line or relay technician with a minimum of five (5) years of field experience with a distribution electric utility, contractor, or related industry may be considered.

Substation Technician 1st Class Education
  • Minimum:
    High School or GED
  • Minimum:
    Certification as a Journey Substation Technician from an accredited substation apprentice program.
Experience
  • Minimum:
    Four (4) years progressive substation experience.
  • Preferred:
    Advancement from SECO Energy’s Substation Technician 2nd Class position. Experience or similar work with a distribution electric utility, contractor, or related industry.
Education and/or Experience Notes

In lieu of Certification as a Journey Substation Technician from an accredited substation apprentice program, a line or relay technician with a minimum of four (4) years of progressive substation experience with a distribution electric utility, contractor, or related industry may be considered.

Substation Technician 1st & 2nd Class Other Requirements
  • Ability to operate a variety of office equipment, including a personal computer, printers, copy machines and telephone.
  • Ability to work irregular hours for assignment completion and flexibility to change scheduling and report to work on short notice during emergency situations.
  • A valid Florida driver’s license for regular driving privileges of a company vehicle; must have and maintain an acceptable driving record as determined by SECO Energy.
  • The normal work week consists of five (5) consecutive eight (8) hour days, Monday through Friday, or four (4) consecutive ten (10) hour days, Monday through Friday between the hours of 6:00 a.m. and 12:00 midnight with one-half hour meal break.
  • The Cooperative will determine if an eight (8) hour or ten (10) hour schedule will be used and shall establish the normal schedule of starting and quitting time.
  • Shift schedules may be changed by giving a 36-hour notice of the changed schedule.
  • Successful completion of pre-employment background check, physical and drug screen.
Living Requirement

To ensure timely response to call-outs, must live within 40-miles radius from the assigned reporting location. Employees who live more than a 40-mile radius from their assigned reporting location must relocate within 6 months of employment. A maximum of one (1) hour will be allowed for response to call-outs. All employees living within the thirty (30) mile radius and are subject to call-outs, are expected to meet the one (1) hour response requirement as stated in Article 10.5. Those employees living over thirty (30) miles but no more than forty (40) miles and subject to call-outs will be required to report within ninety (90) minutes.

Regardless of the living distance, employees that are on-call and provided with a SECO vehicle are required to respond within forty-five (45) minutes as detailed in Article 10.5.

  • Class A CDL - no restriction for airbrake and tractor trailer
