Carpenter Foreman

Job Summary

Supervises and coordinates activities of workers engaged in construction, installation, and repair of wooden structures and fixtures.

• Examine blueprints to determine dimensions of structure.
• Lay out floor-plan and cabinetwork with a rule, framing square, and calipers.
• Select materials and structural units, such as lumber, prefab doors, cabinets of wood or plastic, paneling, and inspect them to ensure conformance with building code and local ordinance.
• Determine the sequence of activities for fabrication, assembly, and erection of structure.
• Assign workers to tasks such as cutting material to size, building concrete forms, erecting wooden framework, and laying flooring.
• Inspect work performed by subcontractors, including ductwork, wiring, and pipe installations, to ensure conformance with specifications.
• Install doors, build stairs, and lay hardwood floors.
• Supervise workers engaged in building timber structures such as cofferdams, trestles, and supports for concrete forms.
• Make cost estimates for contracts.
• Perform other duties as described under Supervisor.
• May be designated according to area of specialization.

High School Diploma, GED or equivalent.

Appropriate training and experience required.

• Physically capable of exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, 10 to 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 pounds constantly to move objects; physical activity requirements exceed those for light work.
• Intellectually capable of applying and interpreting principles of rational systems (bookkeeping, engines, electronics, building), solving practical problems, and handling a variety of variables in situations with limited standardization; must possess basic competencies in algebra, geometry, and shop mathematics.
• Able to read safety rules, shop‑tool and equipment maintenance instructions, and procedures in mechanical drawing and layout work.
• Specific job training required: 4 to 10 years.
