Job Summary
Under the supervision of the Senior Pipe Welding Supervisor, the Pipe Welding Technician assists in the layout, welding, installation, testing, and repair of pipe and similar tubular products according to plans, specifications, codes, and industry standards.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities- Attend work regularly and be available for overtime, weekends, and holidays.
- Review layouts, blueprints, diagrams, or work orders in preparation for welding or cutting metal components.
- Produce high‑quality welds and watertight penetrations with weld steel, stainless, and aluminum.
- Complete welds to specified standards using appropriate equipment and materials.
- Assist in installation and verification of high‑pressure steel pipes and fittings.
- Assist in testing of installed piping systems and related items.
- Set up equipment and weld parts using arc, gas‑shielded arc, submerged arc, or gas welding equipment.
- Repair and replace damaged pipe; fabricate and install metal fittings; install supports, valves, and other control equipment; bolt, clamp, or weld parts to secure them for welding.
- Use hand and power tools to measure, cut, assemble, weld, and install all types of pipe or similar tubular products.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Pass the Carbon Steel 6‑G Pipe Test and the CUNI TIG Test in the 6‑G position.
This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
Requirements- High school diploma or GED equivalence and 1–3 years of pipe welding experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Working knowledge of measuring, fitting, and welding steel and x‑ray pipe welding experience; ability to weld pipe in all positions and mirror weld.
- Knowledge of welding symbols, ship terminology, OSHA, and ABS standards.
- Must pass the SMAW 6‑G Pipe Test to become ABS certified.
- Read and comprehend written, verbal, and diagrammatic plans.
- Apply common sense to execute written and verbal instructions.
- Read blueprints accurately.
- Present information and respond to questions from supervisors and employees.

- Perform basic arithmetic in all units of measure.

- Must be able to work above ground at heights of at least 50 feet and in confined spaces while wearing required PPE.
The work environment is a heavy industrial shipyard with exposure to electrical shock, moving mechanical parts, vibration, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, loud noise, and other hazards. Rigorous compliance with safety procedures, policies, and personal protective equipment is mandatory.
