Job Summary

Assist journeyman in the planning, lay-out, installation, testing and repair of wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus, motors, equipment and control systems in accordance with all applicable plans, specifications, codes and industry standards.

Key Responsibilities
  • Learn to use appropriate hand tools (e.g., drill, screwdriver) and power tools (e.g., pipe threader, conduit bender) to assist electrician in performing duties, including measuring, cutting and bending wire and conduit; drill holes for wiring; pull wiring through openings; assist in lifting, positioning, and fastening objects such as wiring, conduit, and motors.
  • Perform minor repairs, such as replacing fuses, light sockets, bulbs, and switches.
  • Maintain tools and equipment and keep supplies and parts in order.
  • Disassemble, repair and reassemble defective electrical equipment such as motors.
  • Load, transport, unload, and furnish materials, tools, equipment, and supplies to the electrician.
  • Clean work area and restock supplies and materials as necessary.
  • Help install all related items in accordance with applicable plans and specifications; perform other routine duties as directed by experienced craft worker.
  • Participate in all safety-related processes and programs; engage with the work team to aim for zero injuries; stop work authority when needed; report accidents and near misses; participate in investigations as needed.
  • Participate in pre-job work planning and safety discussions; identify safety hazards and take corrective action to eliminate or mitigate hazards.
  • Understand and respond to safety hazards and warning devices; follow lockout/tagout procedures; attend site-specific training and follow procedures as outlined in training.
  • Follow established safety rules and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
  • Use verbal and written communication skills; listen to co-workers’ safety concerns and provide feedback when appropriate.
  • Coordinate work with other trades and co-workers; participate in on-the-job training and mentoring opportunities.
  • Produce quality work meeting requirements of plans, specifications and industry standards; read and understand plans and specifications and related diagrams.
  • Assist journeyman in planning, lay-out, diagram, install and/or repair wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatus and control equipment in accordance with plans and specifications; learn to perform layout independently.
  • Observe functioning of installed equipment to determine hazards and need for adjustments, relocation or replacement; notify supervision of hazards and utilize safety stop work authority as needed.
  • Examine/inspect field conditions, identify problems and cost-saving measures; take corrective actions and report issues to supervision.
  • If certified to operate equipment, ensure safe operation and day-to-day maintenance; complete daily equipment inspections as required.
  • Comply with Company Code of Conduct and jobsite policies.

NCCER Construction Craft Laborer; NCCER Core Curriculum or equivalent Craft Training Program

Minimum Qualifications

At least 1 year of experience working as an electrician or similar craft as a helper or equivalent, with working knowledge of electrical systems, conduit, and fixtures; familiar with the National Electrical Code (NEC). Must have necessary licenses for the jurisdiction if applicable; must have necessary tools. Must be at least 18 years old. Able to complete pre-employment onboarding requirements including background check, drug screen, and motor vehicle records, as allowed by law.

Work Environment/Physical Demands

Physical Demands:

  • Lift and carry heavy items weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Stand, kneel, bend, stoop, move in confined and cluttered places; see and hear with or without correction.
  • Full range of motion and flexibility; use hands to handle, control or feel objects, tools or controls.
  • Repetitive movements; climb and maintain balance on steel framework, stairs, ladders, and scaffolds.
  • Work up to 12-hour shifts in varying temperature extremes and outside conditions; work in cramped spaces and awkward positions.
  • Exposure to hot or cold temperatures and inclement weather; bright or inadequate lighting; noise levels.
  • Work around hazardous equipment; safety-sensitive position.
