Position Summary
Performs duties described in the Service Contract Act Service Order Transportation Motor Vehicle Mechanic. May perform duties of other classifications that have a pay rate equal to or lower than the employee’s current rate.
ResponsibilitiesThe Motor Vehicle Mechanic repairs, rebuilds, or overhauls major assemblies of internal combustion automobiles, buses, trucks or tractors. Work involves diagnosing the source of trouble and determining the extent of repairs required; replacing worn or broken parts such as piston rings, bearings, or other engine parts; grinding and adjusting valves; rebuilding carburetors; overhauling transmissions; and repairing fuel injection, lighting, and ignition systems.
The mechanic keeps equipment available for use by inspecting and testing vehicles, completing preventive maintenance such as engine tune‑ups, oil changes, tire rotation, wheel balancing, and filter replacement. The mechanic maintains vehicle functionality by listening to operator complaints, conducting inspections, repairing engine failures, mechanical and electrical malfunctions, and body damage; verifies vehicle serviceability by test drives and adjusting controls and systems;
complies with state vehicle requirements by testing engine, safety, and combustion control standards; maintains vehicle appearance by cleaning, washing, and painting; records service and repairs; keeps shop equipment operating by following operating instructions, troubleshooting breakdowns, maintaining supplies and performing preventive maintenance; manages supplies by inventorying stock, placing orders, and verifying receipt; updates job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities and reading technical publications.

- Special clothing/equipment: slip‑resistant hard‑toe shoes, safety glasses, hearing protection in designated areas
- Unusual physical requirements: sitting 50%, standing 75%, bending 25%, stooping 25%, high noise level 25%
$33.34 per hour.
