Disability Rights Florida was founded in 1977 as the statewide designated protection and advocacy system for individuals with disabilities in the State of Florida and is the third largest Protection and Advocacy system in the nation, representing a growing, diverse state. Disability Rights Florida advocates, investigates, and litigates to protect and advance the rights, dignity, equal opportunities, and self-determination and choices for all people with disabilities.

We currently have an opening on our Intake Unit for an Advocacy Specialist, and we are seeking applicants who are passionate about the civil rights of Floridians with disabilities. This position will be located in the Tallahassee, Florida office.
The Intake Unit is the initial point of contact with Disability Rights Florida. Staff obtain general information about an individual’s reason for contacting us, along with requesting some demographic information to meet our federal reporting requirements.
As part of this team, the Advocacy Specialist is responsible for initial contact and in-depth telephone interviews with Floridians seeking information or requesting our services, to provide them with appropriate information and referrals, and to facilitate additional evaluation by agency issue teamsin accordance with established case selection criteria.
This position provides direct services to clients, therefore outstanding communication skills and a sensitivity to disability issues are required. The position demands efficient use of phone system technology and excellent computer skills. The ideal candidate would possess a bachelor’s degree or significant experience providing information and referral, as well as a background working in a social services or disability services setting.
Bilingual in Spanish/English preferred. Experience with advocacy for people with disabilities or other vulnerable populations a plus. We offer an excellent benefits package, and a favorable background check is required.
