Position Summary
The Waterfront Director is responsible for the safety, planning, set-up, facilitation, and breakdown of waterfront program activities. This is a seasonal position that will require living on site at either Mah-Kah-Wee Program Center or Riverpoint Program Center, Sunday through Friday, as assigned. Attendance and participation in training, setup, and cleanup weeks are required.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Responsible for the overall safety, operations, and facilitation of all waterfront activities.
- Oversee the safety and well-being of campers in the water.
- Oversee and facilitate small-craft activities (canoes and corcls) during scheduled camper sessions.
- Serve as the primary lifeguard for scheduled camper swim sessions.
- Train and supervise all staff in their assigned waterfront responsibilities.
- Ensure that campers and staff follow safety procedures during waterfront activities.
- Comply with all safety guidelines set forth by Girl Scouts of Citrus Council, Inc. (GSC), Girl Scouts of the United States of America (GSUSA), American Camp Association, and/or all local and industry governing bodies.
- Encourage personal and skill development, a strong sense of self, and overall well-being.
- Ensure proper care, inventory, and use of all activity equipment, program area, and supplies.
- Conduct regular equipment checks and submit repair or replacement requests.
- Complete and submit all required paperwork and reports as directed.
- Ensure that a risk and crisis management plan and emergency procedures are in place and that staff are trained and proficient in the respective procedures and policies; respond to all emergencies and crisis situations as needed.
- Enforce all camp rules and policies.
- Participate in all camp events, staff meetings, and other activities.
- Be a role model; maintain a professional appearance and positive attitude.
- Establish and maintain a good working relationship with all staff.
- Complete all assigned training modules prior to arrival.
- Other duties as assigned by the Camp Leadership Team.
- Must be at least 21 years of age and have a High School Diploma or GED.
- Have previous experience working as a lifeguard and/or waterfront facilitator.
- Have previous experience working with youth in a group or camp setting.
- Must hold current lifeguard certification.
- Must hold current CPR/First Aid certification or be able to pass the training at camp.
- Successful clearance of a Level 2 Criminal Background Screening, the National Sexual Offender Public Website, and completion of GSUSA Girl Scouts Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Course.
- A willingness to adhere to the principles expressed in the Promise and Law.
- The acceptance and understanding that employment is at an overnight camp and that, therefore, work hours are irregular.
- A willingness to live, work, and sleep in a community environment within an outdoor setting.
- Demonstrate sensitivity to the needs and mental wellness of campers.
- Demonstrate enthusiasm, patience, self-control, and the ability to adapt well to changing situations.
- Have a current GSUSA membership or be willing to obtain one prior to beginning work.
- Must submit a current Health Examination signed by a medical professional prior to the first day of pre-camp.
Must have ONE of the following:
- Girl Scouts small craft safety training
- ACA Level 1:
Introduction to Canoeing Instructor or higher - ARC Lifeguarding with Waterfront Module
- American Canoe Association (ACA) Paddle sports Safety Facilitator certification in canoeing AND completion of a flat-water canoe safety and rescue skills course
- Be an instructor with demonstrated equivalent experience in line with above credentials
- Experience in Girl Scouting
- Have previous experience working with youth in a group or camp setting.
- Bi-lingual (Spanish and English)

- Ability to work for long hours standing, walking, and/or sitting while being exposed to the sun, heat, wildlife, and varying weather conditions daily.
