Highway Maintenance Technician II -

The work you will do:

Highway Maintenance Technician II District 3 / District Maintenance / Ponce de Leon Operations

This position will operate machinery and engage in manual labor related to job assignments, including rough carpentry, masonry, painting, and the assembly and installation of highway signs.

Your specific responsibilities:

  • Operates a variety of vehicles and mechanized equipment to include backhoe, tractors with attachments, crew cabs, and dump truck.
  • Performs pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles/equipment that they are operating.
  • Cleans and washes equipment.
  • Uses a variety of hand, pneumatic, and electrical tools to maintain bridges and roadways.
  • Performs independent manual labor incidental to job assignments at an intermediate level of complexity with minimal supervision.
  • Performs rough carpentry, masonry, painting and/or assist in the assembly and erection of highway signs.
  • Performs Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic).

The successful candidate will have the following required knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge of: typical construction measuring tools, equipment, or instruments and standard safety techniques.
  • Skilled in: operating a variety of hand and power tools. operating and performing pre-trip inspection/minor maintenance on vehicles and/or mechanized equipment that they are operating.
  • Abilities: read and understand job-related materials and fill out reports and forms. maintain and repair highways, bridges and/or other highway structures. communicate both verbally and in writing, including following oral/written instructions. develop and maintain effective working relationships with others. lift, carry, and handle up to 50 pounds. stoop, climb, squat, push, pull, crawl or bend on a frequent basis. work outdoors in various weather conditions, on various terrains and at various heights or in high volume traffic.

    stand for an extended period of time. operate motor vehicles and other mechanical equipment.

Licensure/Registration/Certification requirements:

  • Obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Intermediate Level within one year and maintain it.
  • Possess a valid Class "E" Driver's License
  • Obtain a Class "B" License Instructional Permit within 60 days of appointment to position
  • Obtain a valid Class "B" CDL with air brakes within 10 months of appointment to the position.
