Drive key transportation management strategies by leveraging appropriate processes, tools, and technologies, particularly in rail freight, rail fleet management, transloading, and other functions including or adjacent to rail activities. This role also includes the supervision and monitoring of ongoing supplier relationships, compliance tracking, and continuous improvement programs. The position will support a number of strategic initiatives as developed.
Key Responsibilities- Manage and coordinate rail traffic activities, including movements throughout the U.S., Mexico, and Canada.
- Determine the most efficient and economical routing and mode of transportation using rate and tariff manuals, motor freight guides, and railroad resources.
- Communicate transportation quotes and transportation-related issues with Customer Service teams and business stakeholders as needed.
- Manage and negotiate all rail fleet lease activities, including new leases, lease extensions, and railcar returns.
- Negotiate rail rates with Class I railroads and interline switch providers.
- Develop and manage metrics to monitor rail fleet utilization.
- Effectively manage relationships with railroads and railcar suppliers, including business reviews and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Manage day-to-day fleet tracking and the actions required to maintain fleet flow and optimize fleet allocation.
- Serve as a key resource for ERP-related rail transportation issues.
- Conduct reviews of commodity loading practices and evaluate existing procedures and standards. Implement changes designed to improve transportation controls and operational efficiency.
- Work closely with plant personnel, procurement teams, and operations to support transportation requirements.
- Assist in preparing and managing the annual department budget.
- 5-7 years of logistics or supply chain management experience with a demonstrated track record of success.
- Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
- Strong leadership skills.
- Aptitude and willingness to learn strategic sourcing if not already experienced in the area.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to build collaborative relationships.
- Financial acumen and analytical capabilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
