Performs field engineering support duties related to field surveying, drafting, inspecting, asset inventory, and basic engineering duties involving Public Works projects. Supports Public Works staff on in‑house construction projects by performing field surveying and drafting. Manages Right‑of‑Way assets including storm drainage, streets, and utilities. Performs quality checks on asset data, including location, condition, and repair history.
Responsibilities- Performs basic design and construction surveying duties within the public right‑of‑way, takes notes and performs work needed to create designs for Public Works projects in an accurate and timely manner.
- Performs drafting and design duties utilizing a GPS unit, AutoCAD and other drafting and engineering software and equipment.
- Performs calculations for use in preparation of construction plans, boundaries, easements, and other Public Works related projects.
- Performs quality checks and inspections on Public Works infrastructure.
- Acts as instrument technician on field survey performing construction layout surveys for the installation of infrastructure including streets, roads, drainage facilities, and water & sewer facilities.
- Performs quality checks on right‑of‑way asset data, including location, condition, and repair history of storm, streets, and utilities.
- Performs construction activities with stormwater field crews.
- Manages Public Works assets through the program administration of the work order system (City Works) and the asset management software (Storeroom), including database design and data upload.
- Adheres to the personnel, safety, and department policies and procedures.
- Assists other coworkers as needed.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Must have a valid state‑issued driver’s license and a driving record in compliance with town policy.
- An associate’s degree in construction management, technical engineering, or a related field and two years of experience in construction surveying or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education, work experience, and specialized training.
- Must be able to walk, bend, kneel, stoop, reach, climb, see, smell, hear, talk, read, write, and follow oral and written directives.
- Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds.
- Subjected to uneven and/or muddy terrain, noise, chemical exposure, and adverse weather conditions.
- Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.
- Working knowledge of surveying practices, drafting, and construction practices, techniques and procedures.
- Ability to read and understand highly technical or specialized materials such as engineering specifications.
- Ability to perform more complicated mathematics such as business math, simple algebra, simple geometry, trigonometry or elementary statistics.
- Ability to read and interpret charts and tables, blueprints, gauges, dials, meters, Federal or State regulations, ordinances and statutes, and organizational policies and regulations.
- Ability to read, interpret, and research technical handbooks, legal instruments, and blueprints.
- Skill in the use of drafting and surveying instruments.
- Working knowledge of AutoCAD systems, word processing systems, personal computers, and office equipment.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining interpersonal relationships with co‑workers and visitors to the department.
- Knowledge of and ability to configure asset management software (specifically City Works and Environmental Systems Research Institute (ESRI) / ArcGIS software).
- Ability to write and maintain records and reports; and to develop and maintain databases within work order systems (specifically City Works and Storeroom software).
- Problem‑solving skills for addressing complex technical and strategic problems using asset management technologies.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.
- Must be able to work effectively and efficiently with the general public, contractors, public officials, and employees; maintain a pleasant personality at all times; work independently in the absence of specific instructions with little or no supervision; work well under pressure and stress; handle multiple tasks, prioritize and organize work assignments; and maintain confidentiality of confidential matters.
