Position: Maintenance Worker - Utility Line Maintenance (Water Line)

Overview

Under direct supervision, performs routine and repetitive tasks related to the construction, repair, and maintenance of the Town's water distribution and wastewater collection systems, as well as other water and sewer utility operations.

Responsibilities
  • Construct, maintain, and replace water and sewer mains or service lines.
  • Inspect, diagnose, and repair failures in water and sewer mains.
  • Operate various construction equipment and build and adjust manholes and clean-outs; install and repair fire hydrants and valves; prepare trenches; excavate water and sewer mains and services, exposing them for repair.
  • Excavate trenches and ditches for the installation of new mains and/or service lines.
  • Operate sewer cleaning equipment to clean mains, services, manholes, and spills.
  • Disassemble, clean, repair, replace, and test defective or worn parts on water meters.
  • Maintain water leaks and sewer lines; install and change water meters and pit pads; perform other water distribution, production, and collection tasks.
  • Perform general maintenance duties and complete work order tickets for each task performed.
  • Operate light to heavy construction equipment and tools – tractors, backhoes, dump trucks, sewer machine, jackhammers, water main tapping machine, air compressors, trailers, compactors, weed‑eaters, augers, tillers, welders, cut‑off saws, vehicles, power tools, and hand‑held tools.
  • Work safely near high‑speed vehicle traffic areas, including medians and rights‑of‑way.
  • Conduct daily inspections and preventative maintenance of vehicles, equipment, and tools – washing, checking safe operation, servicing, checking fluid levels and lubrication points, inspecting tire pressure, cleaning filters, screens and wind shields, and ensuring road worthiness by verifying lights, horns, braking systems, wipers, hazard equipment, and loads properly secured.
  • Identify and inform supervisor of potential hazards, liability concerns, problem areas, public inquiries, and status of work activities.
  • Adhere to personnel, safety, and department policies and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Valid state‑issued driver's license, with driving record complying with Town policy.
  • Obtain a valid Texas Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License, with proper endorsements and without restrictions, within six (6) months from hire. Driving record must comply with Town policy.
Physical Abilities
  • Must be able to talk, read, see, walk, hear, and follow oral and written directives.
  • Good hand, foot, and eye coordination to operate and repair equipment and vehicles.
  • Operate maintenance equipment and perform strenuous physical activities, including exerting up to 100 lbs. of pressure, lifting up to 100 lbs. of equipment and heavy objects several times a day, shoveling, crawling, bending, kneeling, climbing on and off equipment, and operating vibrating equipment.
  • Work indoors, underground, and outdoors, including in confined spaces such as trenches. Work various terrains – level, slippery, sloping, unstable, or muddy – and under constant noise.
  • Tolerate adverse environmental conditions – inclement weather, hazardous situations such as street traffic, exposure to insects, noxious plants, and snakes.
Desired Qualifications
  • Related utility operation or equipment operation experience is preferred.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Skilled in operating heavy to light construction equipment, vehicles, and power tools safely.
  • Good judgment, competent decision making, multitasking, meeting deadlines, and working well under pressure.
  • Ability to work extensive hours and respond within 30 minutes to on‑call or emergency callbacks.
