Responsibilities

  • Corrective and preventative maintenance of equipment and facilities used in water pumping stations, sewage lift stations, and wastewater treatment plants.
  • Perform corrective maintenance tasks on equipment associated with the operation of a wastewater treatment plant, sewage lift stations, and water pumping stations, including pumps, valves, electric motors, compressors, blowers, fans, electrical switch gear, and control systems.
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks on equipment as specified by equipment manufacturers, such as oil changing, greasing, checking fluid reservoirs, adjusting belts and chains, adjusting alignment of couplings and mountings, and cleaning filters and screens.
  • Assist the Chief Mechanic in documenting equipment maintenance history in the maintenance software by recording equipment run times, documenting replacement parts used for repairs, recording labor hours, and managing spare parts inventories.
  • Identify and investigate causes of equipment failures using specialty equipment, instruments, and tools including voltage/ohm meters, megohmmeters, signal generators, vibration analysis equipment, and thermometers.
  • Assist the Chief Mechanic in training new or less experienced Plant Mechanics or Maintenance Workers on troubleshooting electrical circuits, calibrating level indicators and flow meters, and installing and maintaining sewer metering equipment.
  • Supervise work activities of subordinates, including assigning responsibilities, providing instruction, and inspecting work once complete.
  • Assist the Chief Mechanic in soliciting quotes for equipment purchase or repair and selecting and coordinating the work of general contractors hired to service or repair facilities and equipment.
  • Review graphs and charts on the SCADA system to determine if pumps and equipment are operating properly, and exercise knowledge of principles of operation at remote facilities for troubleshooting.
  • Assist in general housekeeping of building interiors, exteriors, treatment tanks, and other items as needed.
  • Inform supervisor of all problems, deviations, hazards, unfamiliar situations, and all work activities.
  • Assist with other special projects and tasks as directed.
  • Adhere to personnel, safety, and department policies and procedures.
  • Assist other coworkers as needed.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Basic Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED) is required.
  • Valid Texas Class C Driver's License is required.
  • Must be able to obtain a valid Texas CDL B Driver's License with airbrakes and proper endorsements within six (6) months of hire; driving record must comply with Town policy.
Education
  • Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Class C Wastewater Operator's Certificate.
  • Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) Class C Water Distribution certificate.
Work Experience and Other Requirements
  • At least two years of water and wastewater equipment maintenance experience.
  • Must submit to and pass a post-offer, non-regulated drug test and thorough background checks (including criminal history).
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Exceptional knowledge of pumps, compressors, blowers, conveyors, motors, and other types of production equipment.
  • Specific knowledge of wastewater treatment plant, sewage lift stations, and high-service pumping stations.
  • Skill in diagnosing mechanical and electrical failures using specialty measuring instruments such as voltage/ohm meters, megohmmeters, and ammeters.
  • Familiarity with basic principles of operation for different electric motor types, their associated electrical switch gear, and related control systems.
  • Ability to read wiring diagrams and blueprints and troubleshoot control circuits.
  • Good supervisory, problem solving, and training skills.
  • Basic computer operating skills.
  • Ability to maintain an effective and pleasant working relationship with employees, contractors, and the general public.
  • Willingness to work extensive hours, various shifts as needed, and respond within 30 minutes to an on-call or emergency callback.
Physical Abilities
  • Ability to talk, read, see, walk, hear, and follow oral and written directives.
  • Good hand, foot, and eye coordination to operate and repair equipment and vehicles.
  • Capability to perform strenuous physical activities, including exerting up to 100 lbs of pressure, lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying heavy supplies and equipment several times a day; ability to shovel, crawl, bend, kneel, and dig holes for several hours per day; climb on and off equipment; operate vibrating equipment.
  • Capacity to work indoors, underground, outdoors, in confined spaces, in pipes, culverts, manholes, and trenches; on level, slippery, sloping, unstable, and muddy terrain; and under noisy and adverse environmental conditions, including inclement weather; exposure to mechanical, electrical, fume, dust, mist, chemical, toxic waste hazards, insects, noxious plants, and snakes.
