Special Education - Para (5 Positions) at Oakdale Elementary School, Building Personnel, reports to Principal/Assistant Principal, FLSA Class:
Non-Exempt, FTE: 1.0.
This position is responsible for working closely with students in a general education classroom who have learning disabilities, autism, or mild behavior issues, providing the support needed for them to benefit fully from the District’s special education program.
Duties- Discuss assigned duties with classroom teachers to coordinate instructional efforts.
- Prepare lesson materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits, equipment, and demonstrations as needed.
- Present subject matter to students under teacher direction using lectures, discussions, or supervised role‑playing methods.
- Establish a supportive and sympathetic relationship with students without fostering intense emotional involvement.
- Serve as a resource person to the student personnel evaluation team as requested.
- Supervise students in classrooms, halls, cafeterias, school yards, gymnasiums, or on field trips.
- Conduct demonstrations to teach sports, dancing, and handicrafts.
- Distribute teaching materials such as textbooks, workbooks, papers, and pencils.
- Distribute tests and homework assignments, collecting them when completed.
- Enforce school administration policies and student rules.
- Grade homework and tests, record results using answer sheets or electronic markers.
- Complete required reports promptly.
- Teach socially acceptable behavior using behavior modification and positive reinforcement techniques.
- Work with students with multiple physical, mental, and developmental disabilities.
- Use adaptive equipment such as communication devices, wheelchairs, and adaptive feeding tools.
- Assist students with self‑care, hygiene, and feeding as necessary.
- Perform tasks that students cannot do, such as taking notes and handling materials.
- Handle resistive students when required.
- Serve as chief information source for substitute teachers in the regular teacher’s absence.
- Maintain ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding student information as expected of licensed teachers.
- Assist the classroom teacher with additional tasks necessary for a professional, positive classroom environment, and perform other teacher aide duties as assigned.
- Registered license with the Regional Office of Education #17 at time of hire.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills to work with teachers, support personnel, administrators, and the public.
- Professional enforcement of school regulations and policies.
- Ability to maintain good working relationships with colleagues and students.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Ability to push or pull up to 10 lbs.
- Detail‑oriented.
Must possess an educator license with stipulations for paraprofessional educator or professional educator license at hire.
CompensationFully Board‑Paid Medical, Dental, and Vision benefits. Starting pay range $19.48 – $22.40 per hour, based on experience per the 2026‑2027 Teaching Assistant Salary Schedule.
