POSITION SUMMARY

Responsible for maintaining the quality of shop fabrication materials. Ensure that all codes, project specifications and Steel Service procedures are followed according to policy and production guidelines. Ensure the accuracy and completeness of all Quality Control Documentation. Plan, direct, or coordinate quality assurance programs. Formulate quality control policies and control quality of production efforts. Provide coaching and training to enhance quality awareness and improvement.

Essential Functions Statement(s)
  • In accordance with A.I.S.C and A.W.S.D1.1, spot check throughout the fabrication process for conformance to the applicable codes, client requirements and guidelines.
  • Verify that fabricators and welders are aware of project requirements and that welders are qualified for specific welds.
  • Verify that raw materials, purchased parts or components, in-process samples, and finished products meet established testing and inspection standards.
  • Maintain a record set of detailed drawings reflecting inspection results for each project.
  • Inspect all fabricated members prior to welding.
  • Verify proper location and size of all fabricated pieces.
  • Spot check main member hoe spacing, hole gauges, whole sizes, overall length, copes, block outs, straightness, camber (if required), etc.
  • Verify proper filler metals and procedures are known.
  • After cleaning and prior to painting, inspect welding for conformance to A.W.S.D1.1 and specified project requirements.
  • Verify welds for size, profile, location, and quality.
  • Verify that all sub-contract and/or client inspection has been performed.
  • Verify that all required NDT has been performed and is acceptable.
  • After painting spot check for correct dry film thickness.
  • Inspect all fabricated members prior to welding.
  • Must be able to verify compliance with standards, specifications, and overall quality of welding as specified in the welding quality control section of the inspector manual/guidelines.
  • As a standard practice, observe the care of welding equipment and the handling of welding electrodes and wire to assure compliance with the materials and procedures section of the inspector manual/guidelines.
  • Review welder certification files to verify the qualification of welders, welding operators and tack welders.
  • Must inspect welds for A.W.S., A.I.S.C codes and specific project requirements.
  • Check weldments to verify that welds specified on shop drawings have been made. Verity that no welding has been performed that was not required by the drawings. One hundred percent of all welds must be visually inspected for appearance, soundness, and quality of workmanship.
  • Examine welds for size, location and any deficiencies that do not meet acceptance criteria. All unacceptable welds shall be repaired and re-inspected.
  • Determine that welding procedures and filler metals used are employed in the positions, processes currently and polarity that they are approved for.
  • Welds that are required to be non-destructive or other specialized testing shall be performed by qualified N.D.T technicians, either in house or by third party certified testing laboratories if the client so specifies.
  • Analyze quality control results and provide feedback and interpretation to production management or staff.
  • Must have and maintain the necessary tools for the inspection of all fabrication and weldments.
  • Stop production if serious product defects are present.
  • Communicate quality control information to all relevant organizational departments, outside vendors, or contractors.
  • Instruct staff in quality control and analytical procedures.
  • Produce reports regarding nonconformance of products or processes, daily production quality, root cause analyses, or quality trends.
