Job Summary
Under the direction of the Education Director, the Literacy Instructor will work with boys to improve literacy skills and enrich the love of reading in grades 1-4. S/he will lead small-group, leveled guided reading sessions and whole-group read-a-louds and reading comprehension activities. Literacy Instructors will be strongly supported by the Education Director.
Responsibilities
• Teach literacy-based lessons activities in small-group settings
• Promote love of learning by delivering engaging academic content
• Implement classroom management techniques in a way that is conducive to fun and learning
• Observe and track member progress and attendance
• Reinforce positive student behavior and clubhouse rules; maintain a positive relationship with all members, families and staff
• Write, implement and adapt a curriculum and training methods that meets participants' interests
• Attend required department meetings and professional development trainings
• Report any problems, member incidents and concerns to Education Director
• Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
Minimum Bachelor's Degree with a focus in Education or a relevant field
At least 2 years of experience as a Tutor or classroom teacher
Experience working with students from 6-18 years old
Knowledge of NYC school standards preferred
Knowledge of core subjects (Math, English, Science, and History)
Strong communication and organizational skills
Ability to adapt to a changing environment and address the varying needs of the boys
