Position: ER Registrar (Main) - PRN Nights

Overview

The ER Registrar is responsible for managing patient intake and registration processes in the Emergency Department. This role gathers and verifies personal, insurance, and medical information, ensures accuracy and confidentiality of patient records, and delivers high-quality customer service to patients and their families. The ER Registrar supports accurate documentation, insurance verification, and communication across clinical and administrative teams to facilitate efficient department operations.

Responsibilities
  • Greets patients and families in a professional and compassionate manner, ensuring a positive first impression.
  • Registers patients for emergency services, obtaining all required personal, insurance, and medical information.
  • Verifies patient identification and insurance details, updating patient records as needed.
  • Obtains patient or appropriate family member signatures on consent forms, explaining each consent prior to signing.
  • Verifies insurance coverage and eligibility, capturing all information necessary for billing.
  • Collects patient co-pays or deductibles where applicable and informs patients of financial obligations.
  • Assists patients with understanding insurance requirements and resolves insurance-related questions.
  • Documents on all forms if the patient cannot sign the consent forms or notes who signed and has nursing sign off when the patient cannot sign.
  • Verifies insurance and identifies proper plan codes to ensure accurate and prompt payment.
  • Compiles necessary paperwork for quick retrieval and processing of the patient’s visit.
  • Places an armband on each patient before departure to ensure proper identification throughout the stay.
  • Notifies department or physicians of the patient’s arrival and follows up if the patient is waiting.
  • Maintains communication with key personnel during emergency codes and alerts the facility when emergency plans are in place.
  • Performs other duties as assigned and maintains regular attendance.
  • Complies with all policies and standards.
Qualifications
  • Post-secondary education or training in medical office administration or healthcare administration preferred.
  • 0-2 years of experience in a healthcare setting including patient registration, medical office scheduling, or front desk/admissions required.
  • 0-2 years of experience in customer service preferred.
Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities
  • Strong communication and customer service skills.
  • Knowledge of insurance verification and basic medical terminology.
  • Ability to maintain accuracy and attention to detail in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems and registration software.
  • Ability to manage sensitive and confidential information appropriately.
  • Effective interpersonal skills to work with patients, families, and healthcare teams.
  • Ability to remain calm and professional in high-stress or emergency situations.
